Job Description

Assistant Coding Director, Work from Home

Job Summary – The Assistant Coding Director is responsible for supporting the HSC Coding Director in development and evolution of the overall strategy for the Company’s coding operation in the Health Information Management Service Center (HSC). The Assistant Coding Director develops, directs and coordinates assigned coding activities within the HSC. The Assistant Coding Director plans, assigns and directs the HIM coding workflow; actively monitors employee performance and rewards or disciplines accordingly; addresses complaints and resolves problems; and actively oversees and manages production and quality control efforts. 

Supervisor – Coding Director 

Supervises – Coding Manager, Coding Leads, Coding Coordinators, CDI Liaisons 

Duties (included but not limited to): 
• Assists the Coding Director in planning, developing, organizing, implementing and directing the day- to-day functions of the HSC Coding Operations and Clinical Documentation Improvement Operations 
• Provides direct managerial oversight to assigned Management team staff including Coding 
Managers, Team Leads and/or Unbilled Coordinators 
• Ensures complete, accurate, timely and consistent coding while adhering to published coding 
guidelines and Company/HSC policy 
• Coaches and helps develop team members; helps resolve dysfunctional behavior within functional areas; disciplines and counsel staff as necessary 
• Proactively manages (including corresponding communications and escalation paths) significant 
issues in coding, status of projects, barriers and successes 
• Selects, evaluates, trains and provides leadership and direction to reporting staff 
• Facilitates problem solving and collaboration within function areas 
• Responsible for ensuring staff compliance with documented and established workflow guidelines  as it relates to adding and reassigning accounts to work queues 
• Works with multi-disciplinary teams in addressing issues related to coding and clinical 
documentation improvement operations (as applicable) 
• Assists in identifying and implementing process improvements to decrease costs and improve 
service applicable stakeholders 
• Assists in the development and implementation of written policies and procedures that govern the operation of the HSC Coding department 
• Prepares benchmarking, productivity, and performance improvement reports for the Coding 
Director and the HSC Leadership and Facility Leadership as applicable 
• Reviews the HSC Coding policies and procedures periodically, at least annually, and makes 
recommendations to assure continued compliance with current regulations 
• Stays abreast of regulatory requirements and company compliance policies, ensuring compliance 
and timely staff education and training 
• Assumes a lead role for innovation, knowledge sharing and leading practices identification within 
the HSC and among peer group 
• Promptly reports issues or trends to the appropriate member of the HSC Leadership team or other appropriate party 
• Reviews all official data quality standards, coding guidelines, Company policies and procedures and clinical/medical resources to assure coding knowledge and skill remain current 
• CaseMix Index Analytical skills – the ability to analyze trends in CMI and determine root cause and address as appropriate 
• Ensures that all Federal, State and Local laws pertaining to patient privacy are adhered to 
• Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement” 
• Coordinates staff work assignments 
• Ensures safe work practices are being followed 
• Other duties as assigned 

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred EXPERIENCE • Minimum 3 years health care management/leadership experience required • Minimum 7 years recent inpatient/outpatient hospital coding experience • Experience managing a large coding pool or coding review pool strongly preferred CERTIFICATE/LICENSE • RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS required
