In Abbott’s Heart Failure division, we’re advancing the treatment of heart and vascular disease through breakthrough medical technologies in heart failure, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives. Our Heart Failure Business Unit which is a $1B global business and includes Sales and Marketing, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Clinical, Regulatory, and Medical Affairs functions.

Our location in Pleasanton, CA currently has an opportunity for a Controller.   Reporting to the Division Vice President of Finance this role has primary management responsibility for division's/shared services' global financial planning and analysis. Provides strategic direction to department manager in the areas of financial planning, forecasting, reporting and analysis. Responsible for consolidation of global finance reporting and forecasting

What You Will Do:

  • Provides strategic guidance to manager and division functional sr. leadership/global shared service sr. leadership (marketing, research, and development, clinical, information technology, human resources, etc.) resulting from financial planning, analysis and reporting. Financial planning and analysis may include any combination of the following: revenue analysis reporting, shareholder value analysis, market modeling, business development analysis, profit and loss reporting and planning, budget establishment/forecasting/tracking, gross margin analysis, workforce planning analysis, investment analysis, cash flow management, finance system planning, etc.
  • Provides leadership to assigned directors and managers through setting goals which align to company and division/shared service annual operating plans and manages the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring.  
  • Presents financial planning, analysis and reporting results to senior leadership on a regular basis to ensure the division/shared service is achieving strategic plan and annual operating plan commitments.
  • Partners with division/shared service functional sr. leadership on special projects or allocates other appropriate team resources.
  • Oversees consolidated reporting for annual and quarterly results reporting and makes recommendations based on results.
  • Develops and implements common financial procedures and processes across multiple divisions/service groups by influence management.
  • Leads the development of revenue growth strategies across multiple divisions by influence management.
  • Collaborates with other leaders to ensure proper accounting and forecasting of divisional financial results.
  • Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback. Maintains a safe and professional work environment.
  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Education and Experience You Will Bring:


  • Four-year degree or equivalent experience in accounting, financial planning and analysis, or financial auditing.
  • Advanced degree or CPA preferred.  
  • 15 years of relevant work experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred. International experience strongly preferred. Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment. Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects. Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail. Ability to travel approximately 25%, including internationally
  • Progressively responsible experience in all phases of finance and cost accounting in a complex multi-site manufacturing environment. Highly proficient in working with finance/accounting related software packages. Previous experience managing several hundred-million-dollar budgets and/or revenue tracking upwards of several hundred million.
  • Medical device experience preferred
