Job Summary

Possess a depth and breadth of experience in the interconnection of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) with electric distribution networks and electric distribution standards, engineering design and equipment.  Also possess in-depth knowledge of internal/external business and regulatory issues related to DER.  Recognized as an expert within the organization and industry.  Maintains knowledge of leading edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations (i.e. IEEE 1547 WG).  Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities related to DER issues.  Able to lead a Team or mentor others. A Professional Engineering license from the State of Maine, Connecticut or New York is preferred.

Serve as the main point of contact for technical support related to the application and standardization of electrical equipment to facilitate DER interconnections with Avangrid’s Electric Distribution Network.  Provide solutions that assure the operability, safety and reliability of the Distribution Network. Collaborate with other key stakeholders in Avangrid to develop Network Standards and Guidelines to make interconnections more consistent and efficient. Provide ongoing support for regulatory inquires related to complex interconnections, design and equipment solutions.

Develop a strong technical knowledge base to serve as technical advisor (SME) and keep pace of changes and the advancements in:

• DER technology such as fuel cells, solar photo-voltaic, wind, micro-turbines generators and energy storage.

• Industry Standards such as IEEE 1547 series of Standards and Guides for Distributed Resources. UL 1741, the Standard for Inverters, Converters and Controllers for Use in Independent Power Systems and IEEE929, the Recommended Practice for Utility Interface of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems.

• Regulations regarding Distributed Resources by participating in work groups and networking efforts with other utilities.

Work independently with only administrative and general direction. Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the power industry, through training and industry associations. The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve complex distribution equipment/design problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Able to work independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks. Participates and represents AVANGRID’s on Industry associations. Mentor other employees.


Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services.

Duties: Solves unique standards engineering problems. Utilizes a broad
prospective to identify innovative solutions.

Prepare, maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams). Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of complex level of difficulty using depth & breadth of expertise in own discipline.

Duties: Serve as an SME for distribution equipment related to the interconnection of DER. Anticipates internal/external business issues and recommend process improvements. Participate in Industry associations. Acts as a facilitator, mentor & review engineering work of others. Anticipates & make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs. Explains difficult concepts & influences others. May make presentations to regulatory/public entities.

Duties: Lead engineering teams to complete assigned tasks and projects.
Assist in guiding and mentoring engineers in standards engineering methodology. Manages and provides direction for resources outside of the department. Leads others to analyze and resolve complex problems in non-standard situations & develop creative solutions. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & AVANGRID polices/procedures.

Duties: Possesses a depth and breadth of knowledge and interprets processes and standards related to electrical equipment. Recommends solutions and best practices where appropriate. Represents Standards on projects, task forces and studies.
Develop business cases & manage projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable AVANGRID guidelines. Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program.

Duties: Forecast, plan, schedule, monitor, control budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders. Assist in the management of resource allocation including developing forecasts and plans to insure adequate resources are available.

Skills and Requirements

Experience: 10 Years
Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college/university, 10 years’ experience performing engineering duties. Specialized advanced training is also required or graduate level engineering degree.
