**Job Summary**

Battelle's National Security Business Unit is seeking a **Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer** , to work in our Advanced Materials and Energetics Division. This position is located in **Columbus, Ohio** .

The NDE Engineer will support Battelle's Hypersonics business, focused principally on the evaluation of NDE techniques for carbon-carbon (C/C) composite materials manufacturing. The successful candidate will work with a cross-disciplinary project team spanning multiple engineering and science disciplines to evaluate NDE techniques, resolve relevant features, and translate effective NDE tools to the manufacturing environment. Battelle's broad capabilities in deep materials characterization will be leveraged to interrogate micro- and nanostructure to educate technique selection and optimization. The NDE Engineer II will work collaboratively with experts in materials modeling and ICME to deepen the understanding of how materials features and structure impact performance.

**Responsibilities**

+ Develop and execute research plans for evaluation of NDE techniques; apply statistical methods (e.g., DOE) to ensure clear experimental conclusions

+ Compile and evaluate test data, prepare technical specifications, and analyze technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or materials specifications

+ Work effectively and collaboratively with researchers and support staff at varying levels within the organization

+ Contribute to setting technical direction on projects.

+ Document and communicate findings and results, including progress reports, final reports, presentations, and conference/journal articles

+ Build client and external reputation by making presentations of project progress and results through written and verbal reports, presentations, and posters.

**Key Qualifications**

+ BS in Materials Science or related field with 5 years of experience, MS with 2-5 years of experience, or PhD with 0-2 years of experience

+ Successful track record of ideating, planning, and executing technical work in an R&D environment

+ Experience with NDE techniques and their application in the inspection of composite materials

+ Knowledge of the composite manufacturing environment

+ Good oral and written communication skills

+ Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ Knowledge of high-temperature composite materials, including C/C composites and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs)

+ Broader experience with high-temperature materials (e.g., ceramics, oxidation-resistant coatings)

+ Experience in composite materials manufacturing, as well as preparation techniques (e.g., composite layup, RTM, VARTM)

+ Knowledge of composite failure mechanisms and related structure/property interactions

+ Knowledge of fracture mechanics

+ Established reputation for their research initiatives, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications or participation in professional organizations and national meetings
