We are looking for a Senior Instrumentation Technician with skills and experience in electronics, testing systems, and sensor calibrations to support the Test Labs and assist in running the Instrumentation Lab. This position supports structural, durability, and performance testing of commercial vehicle brakes, axles, transfer cases, suspensions, and drivelines.
• Coordinate work described below with test lab managers, engineers, and technicians as well as interfacing with instrumentation suppliers to keep the Test Labs running efficiently and effectively. • Perform calibrations on physical transducers and engineering laboratories test equipment. -Transducers include load cells, torque cells, LVDTs, RVDTs, pressure, thermocouples, accelerometers, encoders, Fluke handheld equipment -Lab Test Systems include MTS Servo-Hydraulics, Link Engineering Dynos, Revolutionary Engineering Dynos, NI LabVIEW, and custom PLC systems • Configure physical signal conditioners pertaining to strain based transducers. • Troubleshoot and repair test equipment – contact external vendors when necessary. • Fabricate custom transducer cables and wiring harnesses. • Maintain the test controllers and computers that run them. • Update calibration database and document equipment repair in SharePoint system • Maintain the Instrumentation Lab equipment, calibration standards, and supplies. Purchase new equipment and supplies as necessary. • Represent the Instrumentation Lab on Quality and Safety initiatives. • Assist in developing new test stands for specific applications.
• Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Mechatronics, or Automotive Technology required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. • Minimum of 5 years experience in test equipment instrumentation and calibration required • Thorough understanding of AC and DC electricity, electronic circuits and components required • Proficient in the use of instrumentation and particularly strain based transducers required • Experience with servo-hydraulic test systems and/or electric motor control test systems required • Able to work standing for long periods of time and lift 40 pounds required • U.S. citizen and the ability to work on military programs • Able to travel on a limited basis
Skills: • Attention to detail regarding the following – calibration, test systems, wiring, documentation, and mechanical setups. • Proficient with Microsoft computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint). • Thorough understanding of calibration process – NIST traceability and scheduling. • Good understanding of closed-loop control systems and PID tuning. • Mechanically inclined to understand and work with mechanical test systems • Good verbal and written communication skills. • Ability to work independently and in a team environment. • Ability to logically solve system problems. • Ability to prioritize workload and utilize time efficiently. • Ability to provide guidance and share knowledge with others.
