Plumber Assistant *NEW PAY RATE*

Job Summary

Under general supervision is responsible for performing entry level semi-skilled work assisting a Plumber in the installation, maintenance, and servicing of plumbing and heating systems. Performs minor plumbing work and repairs under the technical supervision of a Plumber. Exercises no supervision.

Work Schedule

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions

* Assists a Plumber in the installation of new plumbing including pipes, valves, vents, and drains, and a variety of fixtures and equipment.
* Assists a Plumber in repairing and maintaining, existing facilities replacing damaged parts, valves, washers, cleaning traps, drains, and other lines, and frequently lifting/carrying 50 pounds.
* Makes minor repairs in plumbing and heating systems as directed by a Plumber.
* Cleans and maintains tools and equipment necessary to operate plumbing tools and equipment.
* Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

* High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
* One (1) year of experience in the plumbing trade.
* Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
* Must successfully pass all background investigations.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in repairing, maintaining, and replacing plumbing systems to include but not limited to fixtures, pipelines, traps, drains, vents, and other parts of the plumbing system

* Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
* Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Knowledge of tools, equipment, terminology and materials used in the plumbing trade.
* Knowledge of applicable codes and ordinances relating to the plumbing trade.
* Knowledge of basic mathematics.
* Knowledge of hazards and safety measures as they relate to the plumbing trade.
* Skills in the use of all tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
* Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
* Ability to read plans and blueprints.
* Ability to learn to use the more complex tools of the trade.
* Ability to handle all the physical requirements of the job with or without accommodations.
* Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to temperature extremes, dust, dirt, grease, loud noises, or hazardous fumes.
