Responsible for providing technical support in the care and preparation of patients undergoing surgical procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the nurse and the surgeon. Functions as a member of the surgical team in the operating room.

Provides technical assistance to surgical staff in the preparation of patients for surgery and in the preparation of operating room equipment, instruments and supplies.
Assists surgeon at the sterile field with routine and specialty surgical procedures.
Utilizes data from surgical preference cards for the surgical procedure and surgeon
Maintains sterile field during surgical procedures. Adheres to accepted standards for provision of safe patient care in the surgical environment.
Demonstrates understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served.
Demonstrates respect for patient rights and acts as a patient advocate.
Communicates with the surgical team to assist with coordination and provision of surgical patient care.
Assists in orientation of new personnel.
Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; reports unsafe working conditions.
Education: Successful completion of an accredited educational program for surgical technologists or appropriate surgical technologist training in U.S. Armed Forces
Licensure, registry or certification required: Those who graduated after January 1, 2008 OR cannot provide evidence of employment as a Surgical technologist in South Carolina prior to January 1, 2008 must complete Surgical Technologist certification within three months of hire date in accordance with South Carolina legislation AND must also annually complete 15 hours of continuing education to remain qualified for employment as a surgical technologist.
Current BLS (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) required prior to start date directly through the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or the military. Certification must include an in-person skills session.
Special training: Must possess knowledge and skills necessary to provide technical assistance with surgical procedures; other training as required by department.
