Job Summary

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer generally operates under limited supervision and with broad scope of responsibility. They will work independently or by leading other engineers on new or moderate to highly complex assignments. This included coordinating development and support for assigned projects, reviews decisions made by other engineers, evaluates and recommends technical trade-offs and provides technical resolution within the scope of the project. The role contributes to the creation of new solutions, identifies problems, determines root cause, and proposes alternate solutions. This role also provides mentorship and guidance to fellow Mechanical Design Engineers.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

* Designs and documents mechanical components and assemblies for electronics packaging used in automotive applications.
* Performs multiple tasks, tracks progress and drives timely completion of work.
* Maintains communication with internal program team, suppliers and customers to ensure the project technical requirements are clear and get implemented timely and properly.
* Develops and oversees moderate to highly complex mechanical designs, testing, and evaluation of electronics packaging solutions that meet the specified requirements and applicable standards.
* Ensures the design follows the development roadmap and milestones.
* Author mechanical engineering documentation, component specifications, test plans and reports. Facilitates timely release of documentation.
* Prepares progress reports and summary slides for internal/external updates.
* Creates 3D models and associated 2D documentation using Solidworks CAD software by following best practices and standards.
* Validates designs by testing and utilizing various techniques including analytical calculations, simulations, tolerance analysis and DFM/DFA tools.
* Prepares and conducts DFMEA, mechanical design reviews and peer reviews.
* Fabricate design prototypes and test fixtures. Oversee and approve test setup, limits and conditions.
* Correlates simulation with empirical results and perform data interpretation.
* Produces component designs that can be mass produced using established processes such as injection molding, die casting, and sheet metal forming.
* Selects materials (aluminum, steel, plating, plastic, sealants, adhesives, thermal gap fillers, so forth) and assembly processes in order to meet design requirements and cost targets.
* Drives root cause investigations, performs failure analysis and conducts experiments to solve complex engineering problems.
* Provides technical leadership being subject matter expert in an assigned technical area
* Participates on cross-functional project teams involved with new product launch, VAVE, cost reductions and cost estimates.
* Supports ongoing production/manufacturing via the engineering change process, as needed.
* Provides work leadership and guidance to engineering and technical staff.


* 8+ years of experience possessing broad knowledge and hands-on expertise in Mechanical Engineering
* Experience developing sealed enclosures and electronics packaging for automotive applications. Experience with power conversion systems (DC-DC, DC-AC) and motor controls is desirable.
* Demonstrated ability of working on significant and unique mechanical design issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. Master's degree desired

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

* Experience designing electronics enclosures
* Experience with tolerance analysis and GD&T
* Experience with 3D CAD modeling software, Solidworks required.
* Additional experience with CATIA, Siemens NX/Unigraphics and Teamcenter is preferred.
* Experience designing parts produced by die casting, stamping, molding, and extrusion preferred.
* Experience with automotive grade sealed connectors and compliant pin technology preferred.
* Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerances per ASME/ANSI.
* Experience with heat transfer, stress, vibration, sealing
* Prior work in automotive or manufacturing industry is highly preferred.
* MS Office proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Project).
