Job Description

Job Purpose
The Pathology Data Entry Specialist understands and accurately enters patient demographics into a format that is clear and comprehensive. The Pathology Data Entry Specialist must be attentive to information, verifying that it is not erroneous or inconsistent with the information that he/she has concerning the patient, and confer with the team to contact the client when needed to verify information. The Pathology Data Entry Specialist must work closely with the accessioning team and be prepared to interact with them to ensure that the correct patient demographic information and specimen sources have been accurately documented to ensure work flow throughout the entire processing of laboratory specimens.

Key Responsibilities
*Accurately and efficiently enter the patient demographic information, clinical data provided and specimen sources into the LIS (Laboratory Information System).
*Dictates grossing data of each specimen received for processing into the preliminary report to prepare for interpretation by the Pathologist
*Confer with Team when additional information is needed to complete any requisition that is received without required information to complete the preliminary report in the Laboratory Information System
*Enter consultation request information from outside sources and internal Pathologist
*Inquire whether information received is erroneously provided on the requisition when it is not in concurrence with the specimens received
*Print, review and verify content of all reports prior to laboratory team delivery in preparation for the Pathologist for final diagnosis
*Maintain current on all training modules related to job description as assigned by management in a timely fashion

*Remain knowledgeable on all special procedural requests
*Assist with accessioning when needed
*Remain flexible in job duties according to procedures and work flow
*Assist in scanning requisition documentation when needed
*Maintain a clean and safe working environment
*Maintain safe patient information practices as it applies to HIPPA compliance
*Other duties as assigned

Quality Systems Duties and Responsibilities:
Build Quality into all aspects of their work by maintaining compliance to all quality requirements.

*Have completed a course in Medical Transcription from a vocational school, community college program, distance learning programs or have on the job training with a previous employer, preferred
*Have completed a course in Medical Terminology and have a working knowledge specifically as it relates to GI pathology, general pathology and cytology
*A working knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology as it relates specifically to the GI system
*A working knowledge of diagnostic procedures and treatment as they relate to GI pathology and general pathology
*The ability to translate medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded form
*Understanding of legal and ethical issues concerning patient confidentiality as is related to HIPPA regulations

Additional Job Specific Requirements:
*High school diploma or equivalent
*Moderate typing speed of at least 50 words per minute
*Good computer and word processing skills
*Normal hearing acuity and good listening skills
*Must be organized and efficient and be able to multitask in an ever-changing client base
*Detail oriented
*Must be able to work with a sense of urgency while maintaining excellent quality metrics
*Must be a team player who can work closely with other team members to ensure a continuity of care among the team
*Should be self-motivated for efficiency and quality
