The Dental Hygiene Program Director manages the students, instructors, facilities and overall academic quality and integrity of the Dental Hygiene department. The Program Director is responsible for all program outcomes: completion, pass rates and placement. The Program Director is responsible for implementation of all accreditation commission standards and agency regulations as well as the oversight of internal and catalog policy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides input into the student selection process and criteria.
  • Selection of new students as a mandatory member of the Admissions Committee through interviews and ranking of applicants.
  • Recruit, orient and train supervising faculty members for the department.
  • Observe and provide coaching for instructors on predetermined schedules
  • Ensure that student evaluations of faculty are completed and reviewed with instructors.
  • Assure correct scheduling and registration of students each period.
  • Assist with student orientations.
  • Participate in the budgeting process and responsible for ensuring budgetary allocations support the needs of the program.
  • Ensure that a syllabus, in proper format, is prepared and used for each course offered by the applicable department.
  • Assist with ongoing review and development of curriculum in the department.
  • Assist with, and make recommendations for textbook evaluations for each course taught.
  • Assist the Academic Dean with catalog review.
  • Conduct and document regular department meetings.
  • Participate in school and/or Academic Affairs meetings as required.
  • Participate in advisory committee meetings.
  • Participate in self-studies for various accrediting agencies.
  • Assist in maintaining department equipment in proper working order.
  • Oversee correct, compliant, and efficient functioning of the clinic.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Campus Director or Academic Dean.
  • Substitute teach as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Graduate Services Director all information pertaining to the job openings, potential candidates, and any placement updates.
  • Advise students regarding academic progress in the department from enrollment to graduation.
  • Must have a full-time appointment as defined by the institution, whose primary responsibility is for operation, supervision, evaluation and revision of the program.
  • Must have the authority and responsibility necessary to fulfill program goals including curriculum development, evaluation and revision; faculty recruitment, assignments and supervision; input into faculty evaluation; initiation of program or department in-service and faculty development; assessing, planning and operating program facilities; input into budget preparation and fiscal administration; coordination, evaluation and participation in determining admission criteria and procedures as well as student promotion and retention criteria.
  • Must be a dental hygienist who is a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and possesses a masters or higher degree or a dentist who has background in education and the professional experience necessary to understand and fulfill the program goals.
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience for California positions (other states may be less)
  • Current CPR certification issued by the American Heart Association (required within 30 days of employment)
  • Management experience required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and ability to judge instructors’ competence and effectiveness
  • Master's degree or higher in Dental Hygiene preferred
