Position Summary:

The HSE Manager will be responsible for partnering with site level operations team in order to execute company HSE policies and ensure compliance to all applicable regulations. By leveraging lean principles and Kaizen events, this individual will lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce conditional and ergonomic risk in processes to ensure a safe and healthful working environment and reduce environmental footprint. The HSE Manager will demonstrate the ability to build trust and confidence with the operations team and influence change through providing comprehensive risk assessment and safety data analysis.

The HSE Manager will be responsible to lead a team of safety professionals, creating and executing leadership development plans for their team. This individual must communicate expectations and give frequent and appropriate feedback to the HSE teams and ensure they are executing to the core competencies.

 Essential Functions:

  • Ensure environmental and occupational safety regulatory compliance of the multi-site Mexican operation (both US and Mexican regulations, when applicable).
  • Design and implement programs that minimize risk to the company due to environmental or occupational health incidents and property loss events.
  • Develop the organization’s safety and environmental strategy and specific annual goals and objectives in line with the business annual operating plan to achieve product safety, growth and profitability.
  • Strategic advisor for the organization in all safety and environmental matters and as the primary liaison between the Mexico operations and the corporate BCVS HSE Manager.
  • Implement continuous improvement projects to reduce safety & environmental costs and liabilities, considering product safety requirements.
  • Appointed by top management as the ISO14001 management representative with the responsibility and authority to ensure that the environmental management system is established, implemented and maintained in accordance to the standard. Report to top management on the performance of the EMS for review, including recommendations for continual improvement.
  • Appointed as the location’s Safety & Environmental Pillar leader for KPS. Lead employee teams for continuous improvement of HSE performance
  • Act as the representative and counsel for all safety & environmental legal matters, inspections and audits, and acts as the liaison between the organization and local, federal, US and Mexico governmental agencies
  • Develop, recommend and deploy practical, functional approaches and strategies to resolve identified safety & environmental issues, concerns and identified opportunities.
  • Provide safety & environmental expertise for new or modified processes to ensure that environmental impacts are considered, and appropriate controls are established to eliminate or reduce risks.
  • Advice top management and corporate HSE Manager of significant safety & environmental impacts or risks, provide leadership and recommend plan of action.
  • Provide technical support and facilitate resource allocation for resolution of significant HSE
  • Provide training and development opportunities for the HSE team and other key positions as determined.
  • Communicate and Support Product Safety Activities
  • Manage and evaluate performance of HSE team members. Supervise team of hourly employees in the areas of wastewater treatment, waste management and chemical management. Supervise occupational health department including contract doctor and nurses.
  • Coordinate the use and selection of key external partners for HSE technical solutions.
  • Drive and facilitate safety committees for all plants
  • Oversee security department and contract security services for all plants.
  • Support PSA Activities and procedures with team members.

 Management & Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Reports to Mexico Operations/Plant Manager and indirectly to Director of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. Typically reports to Management.
  • Direct supervisor of HSE Coordinators, HSE Leaders, Security and Medical Staff.

 Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of health, safety, and industrial hygiene best practices, regulations, processes and world class management (Continental United States and Out of the Continental United States)
  • Knowledge of chemical and waste water treatment processes
  • Knowledge of measures and calculation
  • Knowledge of all waste management and waste minimization type processes
  • Identify and appropriately complete open tasks within Bendix policies and standards
  • Understands, embraces and integrates Bendix Corporate HSE values into everyday duties and responsibilities
  • Promotes a safe and environmentally friendly work environment for co-workers and clients through a personal commitment
  • Knowledge of best management practices in manufacturing industries
  • Knowledge of security and emergency management
  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation
  • Knowledge of medical practices related to occupational injuries
  • Knowledge of equipment design
  • Knowledge of financial acumen
  • Knowledge of various management systems
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and practices
  • Knowledge of construction industry regulations as they apply to site activities
  • Computer and various data base
  • Knowledge of dangerous goods transportation regulations
  • Knowledge of ISO certification standards
  • Knowledge of effective auditing skills and response
  • Strong knowledge of problem solving, investigative and root cause identification processes

  Experience:

  • 5 to 7 years’ experience in the occupational safety and environmental field
  • Demonstrated experience leading and directing employees and work teams
  • Leadership experience as part of a site’s staff
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience supervising Security services
  • 2 to 3 years’ of Emergency Management and Preparedness experience
  • 1 to 2 years’ experience in risk management activities
  • 5 to 7 years’ of workers compensation and case management
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience related to dangerous goods transportation
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience supervising medical services

 Skills:

  • Bilingual Must (English/Spanish)

 Education/Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field, or other engineering degree.
  • Master’s preferred
