The Neurology Department is seeking a Polysomnogram Technologist  who provides testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. This individual is credentialed in sleep technology and licensed in the state of Maryland. The Polysomnogram Technologist will facilitate communication and coordination among staff and patients to optimize an efficient workflow. Day-time work schedule; possible weekends; no overnight.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).
  • Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
  • Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and Home Sleep Test (HST) to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Lead other procedural protocols for ambulatory devices to include (but not limited) to nocturnal pulse oximetry, ambulatory EEG.
  • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Daily interaction with sleep contractors to ensure protocols are followed and outlined metrics are in compliance.
  • Perform reconciliation of studies and billing.
  • Oversee protocols for study reports to be imported to EMR.
  • Oversee the billing process for sleep studies and laboratory studies.
  • Lead contact for sleep lab supplies and vendor interaction.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or Associate Degree with an emphasis in sleep technology or successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician.
  • Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds either the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.
  • All technologists must be certified in BLS, BCLS or CPR for both adult and pediatric with AED training.
  • Polysomnogram Technologists must engage in continuing medical evaluation in the field of sleep and must acquire a minimum of 30 CEUs in sleep-related activities over the prior 3 years or 10 CEUs per year.
  • Experience with sleep lab operations including Management, QA, tech training and development, coordinating sleep research and clinical trials.
  • Leadership or managerial experience, preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires frequent standing, use of hands to manipulate medical apparatus, and occasional kneeling or crouching.
  • Be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required to perform this job include close/distance/color/peripheral and depth perception.
  • Potential exposure to chemical vapors in cleaning and disinfecting solutions.

Starting Salary Range: ​​​​​​​$18.86 - $25.93/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
