Milieu Counselor (Youth Care Worker)
TITLE: Milieu Counselor - Downtown Shelter
POSITION: Full-Time/In-Person
SALARY: $19.88/hr. - $21.15/hr. (Bilingual - $21.67/hr. - $23.05/hr.)
Open shifts:
- Morning: Sunday-Wednesday 7am-5:30pm
- Swing: Sunday-Wednesday 1pm-11:30pm, Wednesday-Saturday 1pm-11:30pm
- Overnight: Wednesday-Saturday 9:30pm-8:00am
If you can't work four ten-hour shifts, apply for the On-call/Relief Position! Our flexible scheduling allows you to continue your work, personal, school, or other schedule uninterrupted!
We can also offer a “traditional” 5-day work shift option for employees who are unable to commit to the 10-hour workdays.

Morrison is seeking Youth Care Workers of any background, experience, and education to join our team and help youth in our Residential Shelter be kids and enjoy their time with us!
Residential ORR Programs must comply with a Federal COVID Vaccine Mandate. Proof of vaccination is required for employees.
$2/hour shift differential added to your pay for hours worked between 3:00 pm and 7:00 am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (must work 4 hours in the shift that falls within this daily range).
About the Program:
Our shelter is well equipped to comfortably care and provide support for up to 50 youth at a time. Through our residential facility, the youth have access to education and mental health services onsite. The program serves adolescent boys and girls, (11 – 17 years of age) who primarily arrive from Latin American countries, occasionally from other countries such as South East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa.
Position Summary:
Our program is designed to help the youth, by creating a secure and therapeutic environment in which the youth learn the necessary skills to be self-sufficient. Depending on the shift, this position helps youth with education services, find hobbies and skills, provide a clean and safe environment, and during the overnight shift, provide wind-down services and nightly rounds to ensure our youth are comfortable and safe.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Milieu Counselors help adolescent youth (14 – 17 years of age) become acquainted with American culture, language, and customs.
- They are mentors and caregivers for youth in the program, creating a supportive environment where youth receive help with academics and encouragement in pursuing individual interests/hobbies, and learn ways to address behavioral issues.
- Creating a culturally inclusive environment in which the youth can feel supported. Bi-cultural and bilingual speaking applicants are encouraged to apply!
- Ensures the safety of the clients we serve, both in the residential setting and during community outings.
- Demonstrate a commitment to developing a thorough knowledge and application of the Sanctuary model and other organizational policies & practices.
- Participate in staff development, in-services, and training related to equity and inclusion in the workplace; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend, and implement improvements to business practices with awareness and understanding of the impact in a trauma-informed and culturally diverse organization.
Experience/Education Requirements:
- At least 21 years of age
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required (Diploma, GED, or college transcripts required as part of the hiring process)
- Basic computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and Outlook
- Must have at least one year of relevant experience working in child welfare, but that experience does not specifically have to be in a social services setting
- Bilingual Spanish abilities highly preferred (verbal communication skills)
- Must possess a Valid Driver’s License
- Driving experience (Can be trained) Direct Care staff are required to drive a minivan (up to 7 passengers) and a cargo van (up to 11 passengers). Driver’s license is required to support with outings, appointments, or medical emergencies.

- Pass a DHS criminal history background check
