Data Scientist - Software Engineer

Champion X Klein, TX (Onsite) Full-Time

ChampionX is seeking a Data Scientist-Software Engineer located in The Woodlands, TX . The Data scientist provides analytical methods and develops automated digital capability for data consumption, image stitching and phenotype classification (e.g., AI and statistical models for oil & gas industry. This includes upstream, midstream, and downstream applications/ products) for computer vision projects from UAV, satellites, or ground-based imaging platforms. You’ll collaborate daily with a diverse team of machine learning engineers, data engineers, analysts, and technical project managers, each contributing their own unique skillsets to create world-class solutions.

Utilize your skillset to exciting and meaningful initiatives where we leverage data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision to enhance operational processes and workflow in the upstream, midstream, downstream, and emission detection in the Oil & Gas Industry. By proactively identifying and addressing issues with related equipment in each sector, we’re enhancing traumatically HSE and ESG activities and, thus, improving lives, and protecting the environment. This is a highly visible, highly impactful area affecting multiple businesses and our customers.

Involve in extensive problem solving that spans several areas including computer vision, machine learning, image processing and cloud computing. The development of computer vision and machine learning algorithms for object detection and recognition, large-scale indexing and retrieval and multimedia understanding. Actively present outcomes to high-level executives, peer data scientists, and internal or external customers.

What You Will Do:

Computer Vision applied to Machine Learning

  • Train and evaluate neural networks for CV tasks, such as object detection.

  • Prototype, troubleshoot, and fine-tune different ML models in the context of CV.

  • Sanitize, organize, and prepare training, validation, and test sets.

  • CV tasks: camera pose estimation, relative navigation, object detection, segmentation, classification, photogrammetry

  • Evaluate ML training using tools such as precision-recall metrics, ROC curves, and confusion matrices.

  • Serve as technical lead in vision area and work closely with other software engineers, product managers and QA personnel to create high quality and highly performing solutions

  • Maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to computer vision and participate in the development of intellectual property

  • Drive the design and development of imaging and CV algorithm and software applications implemented on cloud services

  • Define systems specs, design, and iterate on early prototypes, and help create a novel user experience

  • Evolve the development of programs and projects with funding coming from business units or within the Digital Division

Image Processing and Data Analytics

  • Collect field or lab data using cameras, sensors, and various data acquisition systems.

  • Assembling image data sets and data wrangling (collection, sanitization, organization).

  • Characterizing data using statistical descriptions and dimensionality reduction

  • Image data synthesis and augmentation.

  • Image color, brightness, distortion correction and camera distortion calibration.

  • Build robust solutions to some of the challenging recognition problems in machine vision and continuously improve performance of existing algorithms

Software Development

  • Develop demonstration apps to showcase object detection models

  • Build software package that automatically annotates image datasets.

  • Use version control systems such as Git to track changes and coordinate software development on shared projects.

  • Distributed computation across multiple CPU / GPU cores.

  • Setting up and maintaining programming environments.

  • Participate in the design, implement and deliver of software systems for large-scale deployment to the cloud, prem, or IOT edge devices

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer vision, machine learning, or related discipline

  • PhD or Masters in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Statistics or related fields with a focus on Computer Vision and Software Development, emerging talent welcome to apply

  • Knowledge of data mining and analytic methods such as regression, classifiers, clustering, association rules, decision trees, Bayesian network analysis, should have expert-level knowledge in of these areas

  • Proficiency with a statistical analysis package and associated scripting language such as Python, R, Matlab, SAS

  • Agile DevOps, Scrum, and Sprint knowledge

  • Have a mindset that focuses on continuously delivering small manageable increments of a project through iterative development and testing.

  • Programming experience with SQL, shell script, Python, Java

  • Knowledge of and ideally some experience with tools such as Pig, Hive for working with big data in Hadoop and/or Spark for data extraction and data prep for analysis

  • You must be curious by nature and love learning about new programming languages, algorithms, and applications,

    • 2+ years building predictive models

    • 1+ years of experience with computer vision and software development

    • 2+ years of Python coding and knowledge of R

    • 2+ years of using SQL to create advanced queries in a high-impact role

  • A self-starter, and a fast learner, work efficiently both independently and as part of a team

  • Google VertexAI with AutoML and MLOps experience
