Law Clerk
ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Law Clerk to support the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO), Western District of Virginia. Your scope of work includes providing a wide variety of technical paralegal services and supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) within the Criminal Division.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide a variety of direct paralegal services to assist AUSAs
- Seek information from known sources and locate new sources of information to aid investigations, litigation, and trials
- Gather factual material using legal authorities and current case law
- Read, annotate, and summarize transcripts, files, and other factual aspects of cases
- Obtain financial and statistical information, agency records, court records, and public records
- Analyze documents, assist with agency interviews or potential witnesses, and draft factually precise legal memoranda
- Review, organize, and analyze the financial and management operations of various organizations
- Gather, sort, and examine financial documents from various sources (e.g., statements, bank records, etc.)
- Interpret data and statistical evaluations to prepare and present oral and written reports to AUSA and/or judges
- Review and analyze health care records (e.g., medical records, billing records, Medicaid or Medicare data, etc.)
- Perform timely and accurate case file review and analysis against legal standards
- Note case file deficiencies and request further investigation to correct deficiencies within approved authority
- Perform assigned case development tasks utilizing established legal research tools and reference materials
- Organize, inventory, and process large quantities of records, data, and discovery documents
- Prepare exhibits for settlement discussions, discovery requests, and trial
- Organize and analyze discovery responses
- Provide automated litigation assistance to attorneys in fraud-related trial preparation and courtroom presentations
- Use various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters
- Prepare documents, statistical charts, and visual materials for use in trials
- Provide technical support (e.g. enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits)
- Perform government work with 95% accuracy
- Complete duties according to set deadlines provided by AUSA or court
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
- Proficient in office technology (e.g., computers, fax machines, copiers, etc.)
- Knowledge of legal procedures and terminology
- Knowledge of legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis, etc.)
- Knowledge of E-case filing systems (e.g., CaseView, etc.)
- Knowledge of document scanning software (e.g., E-Scan, I-Pro Eclipse, CaseMap, TimeMap, etc.)
- Knowledge of software used to display documents at trial (e.g., Trial Director, etc.)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
BACKGROUND
- 2 years of experience in a professional office environment required (legal setting preferred)
EDUCATION
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Paralegal certificate preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
LOCATION
- Roanoke, VA 24011

- May be permitted with approval
CLEARANCE
- U.S. citizenship required since this role supports the U.S. federal government

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Applicants will be subject to a background investigation. Individual’s primary workstation is located in an office area. The noise level in this environment is low to moderate. Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 100% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc. Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 100% of the time.
