UPS Supply Chain Solutions is currently seeking a Customs Brokerage Compliance Supervisor to impact the business by mastering regulatory requirements. The Supervisor will take on an exciting role with opportunities for growth by supporting internal and external clients with trade compliance needs across a wide variety of industries (potentially including but not limited to automotive, manufacturing, technology, defense, energy, etc.). The ideal candidate will possess a Customs Broker License or be currently pursuing a license from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. 

This Customs Brokerage Compliance Supervisor will be a resident subject matter expert within their functional area for global trade compliance (classification, qualification, origin, etc.), serving in a leadership role by engaging clients on complex trade compliance issues, mentoring new staff, and working with a team of peers to drive organizational philosophy/process/interpretation. The Customs Brokerage Compliance Supervisor files drawback claims, origin/qualification determination, and/or classifies products, performs Drawback, Origin, and/or Classification review and consultative services to both internal and external clients as well as U.S. and foreign government officials, as needed. In addition, he/she coordinates and presents company technical seminars and training. The Customs Brokerage Compliance Supervisor will also write ruling requests to Customs or other relevant agencies such as US Bureau of Industry and Security, and draft position papers or reports for clients on an as needed basis.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Files drawback claims, assigns tariff/export classification or performs origin/qualification to client's merchandise based on descriptive information and reviews drawback claims or tariff/export classification or qualifications to client's merchandise by others to ensure accuracy
  • Develops and monitors operational quality goals and standards to meet specifications
  • Provides guidance and support to clients regarding drawback eligibility and/or export/re-export licensing determinations and authorization
  • Supports and conducts drawback and/or export compliance reviews and training for clients
  • Conducts and provides guidance for root cause analyses to develop corrective action plans
  • Determines employees’ training needs to produce continuous development plans
  • Provides on-going feedback and support to improve performance 
  • Serves as mentor and trainer to those preparing to take the Customs Brokers Exam
  • Keeps current regarding changes in government rules and regulations relating to drawback, import and export activities
  • Prepares ruling requests to Customs on behalf of clients and helps others do the same
  • Prepares position papers and analytical reports on subjects requested by clients

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency in functional areas (classification, qualification, origin, export, etc.)
  • Consistently demonstrate initiative, positive attitude and commitment to personal, team and company goals
  • Forward-thinking and possesses the ability to identify process improvements
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment under minimal supervision with a high attention to detail
  • Strong research, analytical, verbal/written communication, customer service, and time management skills
  • Strong knowledge of US Customs and Border Protection Regulations
  • Intermediate knowledge and use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access, if necessary)
  • Experience (e.g., from importer/exporter, managed services provider, broker/forwarder, etc.) performing any of the following technical compliance functions – classification (import and/or export), origin, qualification or drawback 
  • Bachelor's Degree (or internationally comparable degree) - Preferred
  • Customs Broker License - Preferred
  • Strong knowledge of export regulations, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Export Administration Regulations, Foreign Trade Regulations, etc.  - Preferred
  • Minimum of three years of general office experience - Preferred
