The Assistant Vice President of Technical Accounting is a newly created role reporting to the controller to support the continued growth and complexity of the organization as the Company transforms its finance function for sustainable growth. The AVP – Technical Accounting will be the primary source within the finance function for technical accounting research and knowledge, and will help drive compliance with required accounting standards, technical accounting issues with new transactions and projects, and implementation of new US GAAP and Statutory accounting standards, including LDTI and CECL. The AVP – Technical Accounting will also assist with the preparation and review of various US GAAP and Statutory financial statements, as well as compliance with relevant internal controls under Sarbanes-Oxley.

Major Responsibilities and time spent:

  • Develop, maintain, and communicate US GAAP and Statutory accounting policies and procedures related to financial accounting and reporting activities
  • Assist accounting team members to review contracts and agreements, research relevant accounting matters, and recommend accounting and disclosure requirements for complex transactions, including but not limited to the areas of reinsurance transactions, new alternative asset investments, income taxes, and derivates/hedging
  • Prepare or review technical accounting memorandums for transactions and support the review process with finance management and external auditors
  • Partner with entity and divisional controllers and other finance department areas (investment accounting, tax, actuarial, etc.) in providing accounting expertise to achieve financial integrity
  • Lead and support the company’s efforts in the evaluation and implementation of new accounting pronouncements relating to US GAAP and Statutory accounting. This entails specifically leading company through cumulative expected credit losses (CECL) standards implementation, and helping with the long duration targeted improvements (LDTI) standards implementation
  • Keep up to date on new and emerging technical accounting and related regulatory developments and understand and provide interpretation of new accounting standards to assist management in evaluating financial and operational impact, including NAIC blanks changes for year-end statutory annual statement reporting
  • Represent the Company at industry meetings, including the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) accounting committee
  • Identify accounting issues/concerns and recommend mitigating solution(s) to management
  • Support the financial reporting team with quarterly and annual financial statements and filings
  • Assist with the preparation and review of quarterly and annual financial reporting for US GAAP financial reports, including the consolidated GAAP audited financial statements
  • Support the year-end audit process and partner effectively with external auditors, providing support and guidance as necessary
  • Serve as a technical accounting resource for ad hoc questions and initiatives
  • Support the accounting controls, systems, and processes to be compliant with the internal control requirements under Sarbanes–Oxley, including identification and implementation of continuous improvements within the finance organization
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders in the Company to partner and execute on finance related projects and initiatives, as assigned from time to time

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressive, relevant experience in Accounting
  • Big 4 public accounting experience or combination of public and private experience
  • Proactive self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal daily direction from management to accomplish objectives and deadlines
  • Strong US GAAP and Insurance Statutory technical accounting and reporting foundation with knowledge and practical experience in topics including but not limited to reinsurance, life and annuity product accounting, derivatives and hedging, and financial statement presentation and disclosure
  • Experience researching and documenting US GAAP technical accounting matters
  • Strong advisory/consultative skills with a service mindset and the ability to build key working relationships with finance and accounting teams
  • Experience evaluating and identifying controls and process areas requiring improvement, and developing action plans accordingly
  • Experience implementing accounting standards and special projects a plus
  • Strong organizational, problem solving and project management skills
  • Attention to detail and risk-based analytical thinking
  • Flexibility in adapting to a non-routine and fast paced environment
  • Ability to identify, escalate and respond quickly to unexpected challenges and opportunities
  • Strong writing, presentation and communication skills and ability to easily explain complex accounting issues and conclusions to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to effectively lead, inspire and influence team members and management
  • Experience in a fast moving, high growth environment providing strategic direction from a financial reporting and operational standpoint a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • Comfortable with remote work and collaboration

Required Education / Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA designation required
