PG&E’s Information Technology (IT) organization is comprised of various unified departments which collaborate effectively in order to deliver high quality technology solutions.

This position is with the Customer Web team.  A critical part of how we operate is to apply design thinking, DevOps, Agile, and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) principles and methodologies. 

Position Summary

We are looking for a Release Train Engineer (RTE) to be part of our team.  The RTE is a servant leader and coach who facilitates the Agile Release Train (ART) processes and execution. They escalate impediments, manage risk, help ensure value delivery, and help drive relentless improvement. They participate in the Lean-Agile transformation, coaching leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in the new processes and mindsets. They help configure SAFe to the organization’s needs, standardizing and documenting practices. They support and reinforce the Scrum or Kanban methodology and furthering of Agile within the team. They coach and support the ART.

Responsibilities:

  • Fosters teamwork, trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.
  • Increase transparency by leading process improvements in reporting
  • Ensures alignment of desired technical and product requirements with delivered solution
  • Facilitate PI planning and other SAFe activities (e.g., SoS & PO Sync)
  • Coordinate PI planning readiness
  • Trains and mentors Product Owners and Scrum Masters in SAFe processes
  • Helps manage risks and dependencies in the ART
  • Build and analyze agile metrics such as ART business value delivered and team velocity
  • Facilitate team building and chartering activities
  • Identify team or team member growth edges and supports that growth
  • Collaborate with other Scrum Masters and RTE’s to support the organizational culture
  • Guide the team to a level of maturity so that they can take full ownership
  • Partner with leadership to identify issues that will prevent team from delivering
  • Coach team members the fundamentals of agile and SAFe
  • Collaborate with product owners, tech leads and leadership to deliver value to our customer
  • Worked closely with team members to make sure strong, health relationships are established

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Technical Competencies Desired:

  • Experience as an RTE
  • Be an expert in team coaching, teaching and facilitation 
  • Able to practically apply Scrum and Kanban 
    • Understand and can explain the ‘Why’ of Agile approaches
    • Can help the team build collective ownership
    • Have proven experience in Scrum and Kanban as acting scrum master or team leader
    • Expert in and can teach how to do a retrospective, relative estimation and other Scrum practices
  • Expertise in either technology or product development
    • Technical expertise and can mentor teams in development and Extreme Programming Practices such as: Test Driven Development, Pairing, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment, Collective Ownership, Evolutionary Architecture
    • Product expertise and can mentor Product Owners and Product Managers in product development mastery
  • Knowledge of DevOps, vertical slicing, iterative delivery, minimum viable product, story mapping, prioritization techniques, relative prioritization, and Kanban.
  • Energetic and humble leader that is focused on people and team empowerment
  • Has studied or applied any of these: 5 Dysfunctions of a Team, Appreciative Inquiry, Open Space Technology, Lean Coffee facilitation, Lean theory, System Coaching, Theory of Constraints, personal coaching, Constellations, improv acting, Design Thinking
  • SAFe certification(s) or training
  • Has participated in the Agile community
  • Has led a Community of Practice

Experience and Education:

  • Education Minimum: High School or General Educational Development (GED) Diploma
  • Experience Minimum: 5 years of job-related experience, including a role on an Agile team
  • Education Desired: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in an agile role (RTE, Scrum Master, etc.)
  • Experience Desired: 3-5 years of experience as Release Train Engineer
