SOME (So Others Might Eat) exists to help the homeless and poor of Washington, DC. With over 30 programs throughout the District of Columbia, we provide a wide spectrum of services to the most vulnerable individuals and families of our city. We strive to provide success paths toward mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training and employment with a living wage, affordable housing, and ultimately living independently and confidently.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is currently seeking a part-time Night Monitor for our new Karin House location in our Senior Services Department.

Program Overview: The Night Monitor will maintain the security of the facility during off-hours. The Night Monitor will provide upkeep of facility and maintenance activities to provide a comfortable, clean, and dignified home for residents. The Night Monitor will perform light cleaning of the building and grounds and provide light facilities maintenance.

Covid-19 Considerations: : SOME (So Others Might Eat) currently has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. We require all employees to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccination and boosters except where a reasonable medical or religious accommodation can be granted upon review by human resources. Schedule: Looking for a weekend job? Fridays & Saturdays ONLY!

Friday from 4:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Saturday from 8:00 am - 11:00 pm (20.5 hours per week)


Required: Some High School education; 1-3 years experience of security, residential and/or janitorial experience

Preferred: HS Degree/GED; 3-5 yrs. janitorial experience; experience providing services to low-income populations, families, and seniors; Driver's License

Required License/Certification: CPR/First Aid/AED Certification

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

* Knowledge of basic cleaning and maintenance techniques
* Ability to establish and adhere to strong professional boundaries
* Good customer service skills
* Flexibility with the ability to multi-task despite competing priorities
* Effective communication skills with the ability to read and write
* Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work tasks
* Ability to work independently and work in a team environment
* Ability to de-escalate situations and resolve conflict effectively
* Ability to have sensitive and appropriate communication with diverse audiences
* Basic computer skills
* Effective time management skills

Expected Contributions:

Maintenance: Provide cleaning as needed to common areas, bathrooms, lounges, kitchens, etc. Perform light facilities maintenance duties. Assist in room turnovers for move-in and move-out as needed. Provide snow and ice removal from walkways during winter.

Program Management: Inform the Service Coordinator and Program manager via communication log all building activity daily; specifically noting when residents have special needs or require assistance. Perform drug and alcohol testing as assigned. Establish a relationship with local law enforcement. Assist with resident lock-outs as needed. Address emergency situations, as needed.

Safety Management: Monitor facility after-hours and maintain a logbook. Inform Program Management of any emergency or security concerns. Develop and submit incident reports, as needed. Conduct building and property walkthroughs at regular intervals. Maintain building security and regularly review security cameras.
