Renewable Natural Gas Lead - Americas

GHD Houston, TX Full-Time

Role Purpose:

The Renewable Natural Gas Leader and Technical Director will be responsible for the growth and delivery of RNG strategies and projects to foster both the expansion of GHDs current service offerings primarily in North America but with interface into the global business as well as serving on Projects as RNG technical expert related to process equipment and process design. The focus will be on several key areas in the first year:

  1. Development of a strategic plan for RNG in the Americas in collaboration with GHDs RNG community as well as establishment of contact with the RNG community including developers, off takers, utilities, gas marketers, and oil and gas firms. (30% of time)
  2. Execution of technical work including technology assessment and conceptual designs, and support to the hydrogen and RNG teams across our business. (60% of time)
  3. Embedment in the Americas Future Energy Ambassadors network and the Americas RNG Working Group, and will work closely with the Global Leader for Future Energy, Canadian Future Energy Leader as well as the Canadian and US Business and Regional Leaders. (10% of time)

Responsibilities:

Client

  • Interface closely with four main stakeholder groups in GHD:
    • GHD Business Leadership – Regional General Managers, Executive General Managers in both Canada and the USA.
    • Market Leadership in Water, Environment and Energy & Resources
    • The Waste Management group, which houses significant technical expertise in RNG and AD technical performance metrics, capital and operating costs, vendor data, and project sheets on developed projects
    • The Future Energy Ambassadors team across North America
    • GHD Advisory, where this group will help in the development of commercial models to package project portfolios under the direction of the Lead. The RNG Leader will take advantage of GHD Advisory to develop techno-economic models for RNG to establish business cases for project origination and for clients
    • GHD Digital, where this group will develop geospatial tools to identify renewable natural gas opportunities throughout North America, based on data-driven processes, tying in existing GHD knowledge across the agricultural, landfill, food waste AD and wastewater sectors

  • In collaboration with stakeholders Develop a strategy for RNG in the Americas, through Canada and the US, with emphasis on the US market. Outline geographies of particular importance given market condition. The strategy will be driven in conjunction with the RNG working group to further prioritize developers, oil and gas firms, financing parties, municipalities, off takers, gas marketer and utilities that present market entry opportunities for GHD
  • Continue to refresh the strategy with updated market intelligence, and update an annual business plan
  • Identify additional delivery talent in the RNG space that would enhance GHD’s technical teams, as well as partnership opportunities with other firms that present strategic value
  • Utilize market contacts to establish new clients for GHD where engineering, technical, Advisory and Digital services can be provided. Engage in client meetings with the appropriate support from the RNG and other teams throughout the Americas. Help to develop pipeline and backlog growth in the RNG field. Ensure client opportunities are captured in Opportunity Tracker and updated in a timely manner
  • Work with existing GHD RNG clients to enhance offerings, including optimization opportunities such as methanation of carbon dioxide, gasification, RNG to H2, biogas to Electricity (mainly through fuel cell), CO2 liquefaction, and any other relevant technology for the biogas market; assist with developing business cases in conjunction with Advisory to bring into the client space that improve financial performance of projects
  • Assist with discussions of offtake markets, incentives, cap-and-trade, and other carbon-related mechanisms that factor into RNG business cases, across the Americas. Work with the existing RNG team to exploit contacts in the offtake markets
  • Provide technical support to the technical teams around technology assessment in RNG, and conceptual design, and define hand-over points to the detailed design teams. Enhance client conversations by bringing detailed knowledge of the vendor space into the discussion around technology assessment and recommendation
  • Providing support for commissioning of RNG systems where GHD has either been involved in design or full EPC
  • Support GHD’s presence at key market events and conferences, as well as make recommendations about key associations to be involved with
  • Provide support to the hydrogen team in the Americas on the subject of renewable hydrogen, particularly in the mobility sector. Be part of the Americas + EMEA Hydrogen Working Group.
  • Provide input into the Global Future Energy groups considering the development of RNG activities in EMEA and Australia

People

  • Collaborates with Global, North American and Regional Market Leaders, Client Relationship Managers, Service Line Leaders, Engineering Design Organization, and Client Sector Leaders to achieve excellent business outcomes. Collaborate with the key stakeholder teams as noted above.
  • Develops and mentors senior leadership and/or rising talent within the business
  • Works with project directors, managers, and teams to establish and improve Business Group job delivery skills. Interfaces with senior management to explain the value of alternative commercial models and how they transform GHD business
  • Attracts strategic hires to develop the business

Performance

  • Maintain a billable expectation of 50%, largely on technology assessments, conceptual designs, and optimization engineering
  • In Year 1, penetrate the market and develop $2M in new engineering fees for the company
  • Establish at least 3 new client relationships for GHD in the RNG space

Experience and Skills:

  • Education requirement – Engineering degree, advanced degree preferred
  • Required years of experience - Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the renewable gas field
  • Required technical skills – Knowledge of RNG equipment vendors, and ability to guide teams through technology assessment and conceptual design, as well as review of designs provided by others
  • Other skills - Excellent written and oral communication skills; proven ability to develop and mentor. Bilingual in French and English.
