ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for independently performing testing and evaluation on a variety of products to the provisions of U.S., Canadian and other International product safety standards; writing reports; and communicating with clients. This position is also responsible for providing local expertise in one or more product categories and mentoring and training less senior technical personnel.

We are currently seeking a Senior Functional Safety Engineer to join our growing team! Our ideal candidate will have a degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering and experience working with product development lifecycles, testing, and risk management. This individual will support be in the center of our global Functional Safety Division and contribute to various lines of business. Software development, This position is responsible for independently performing testing and evaluation on a variety of products to the provisions of U.S., Canadian and other International product safety standards; writing reports; and communicating with clients. This position is also responsible for providing local expertise in one or more product categories and mentoring and training less senior technical personnel.



We are currently seeking a Senior Functional Safety Engineer to join our growing team! Our ideal candidate will have a degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering and experience working with product development lifecycles, testing, and risk management. This individual will support be in the center of our global Functional Safety Division and contribute to various lines of business. Software development, testing experience, or safety analysis experience is a must for this position. This individual will also work with cutting edge technology like robotics, artificial intelligence, IOT, Cybersecurity and have an opportunity to grow and support additional markets/standards.

  • Independently manages execution and timely completion of engineering projects in multiple product categories by analyzing project scope and determining project specifications, establishing test programs for complex product investigations, and preparing reports for clients.
  • Provide local technical expertise and maintain reviewer status in one or more product categories.
  • Proactively develop and communicate test procedures, new test fixtures and report shells for local office.
  • Demonstrate enough product and/or standards knowledge to be considered an expert in multiple product categories for the local office.
  • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying Intertek requirements. Determines areas in which the product is not in compliance with Intertek requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications, and notifies client.
  • Coordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians and by establishing completion dates. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. Serves as Project Handler of record and signs as Reviewer of record as assigned.
  • May represent Intertek on technical committees and/or industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Directs and reviews work of assigned staff. Trains office, field, and/or laboratory staff and entry level engineers. Provides technical assistance in several product categories, operations or systems to laboratory and/or field staff.
  • Independently conduct on and off site evaluation of products to determine compliance with applicable standard(s). To do this, Project Engineer must:

  • Read and determine applicability of national codes and standards clauses for the EUT (equipment under test);
  • Read and understand schematics and manufacturing instructions;
  • Validte the project scope and sample applicability;
  • Under ascope of the project, identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing;
  • Follow established test plan;
  • Set up and operate EUT; perform and document simple repairs on EUT as needed;
  • Conduct thorough construction review; document results;
    • Perform testing of products in accordance with standards. Core tests include, but are not limited to: rating, leakage current, dielectric, temperature, pressure, stability, mechanical hazard, flammability, abnormal and fault insurance, rain, radiation, sound, and laser.
  • Mentor less senior technical personnel.
  • Supply information for quotes such as length of project, site needed, rental equipment, samples, and standards that will be used.
  • Complete preliminary design reviews (PDR) both on and off site.
  • Provide more specialized %22expertise%22 in one product category, i.e., become reviewer, resident expert, or obtain and maintain advanced product knowledge.
  • Develop and set up test plans.
  • Perform field labeling jobs.
  • Set up and operate standard test equipment including, but not limited to: spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, multi-meter, dielectric strength tester, ground continuity tester, digital multi-meter, surge generator, over-voltage tester, environmental condition chamber, and articulated probes. Use hand tools to build/calibrate test fixtures.
  • Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system. Move equipment as needed through the facility. Properly package sample for shipment.
  • Provide sales support such as attending client visits.
  • Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing. Provide on-going support to clients as needed.
  • Within policy guidelines, identify, properly document, and recommend engineering judgments.
  • Perform other work as required.

Job Requirements

• Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program plus 5 or more years directly related work experience.
• Must be able to read and understand schematics, and analyze analog and digital electronic circuits. Preferably work experience either on the design or certification side.
• Experience working with embedded firmware. Should have, at a minimum, experience in the “C” language and assembly language. Preferably work experience either on the design side or the certification side.
• Good communication skills. Efforts are coordinated with both external customers and internal customers (i.e. account manager, regional production manager and peer engineers). This includes having good report writing skills.
• Experience with functional safety or software safety standards such as UL 991, UL 1998, UL 60730-1, IEC 61508, ISO 13849, or similar.
• Experience with risk analysis techniques like FMEA, FMEDA, FMECA, dFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, (FTA), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) techniques. HAZOP, STPA, STAMP and other related techniques are also relevant.
• Reliability analysis is preferred similar to Mean Time to Failure (MTTF), FIT rates, Beta Factor, Diagnostic Coverage (DC), RAMS, and other related techniques.
• Working knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.
