Job Description

This is a Test Evaluation and Support Team contract position (TEST2) contract position at the NASA White Sands Test Facility. This position may be assigned to Jacobs Technology or a teammate company.  

This is a full time position at the NASA Test and Evaluation contract assigned to Jacobs Technology, Inc. or a teammate company.  The successful candidate will contribute key technical support to the Materials Technology Group, which provides materials characterization, mechanical testing, nondestructive testing, corrosion evaluation, materials selection, and failure analysis services.  Responsibilities include technical consultation to internal and external customers, interpreting codes and specifications, laboratory procedure development, preparation and presentation of formal documents such as reports, standards, and other technical papers. This position requires the ability to analyze test data and apply NDE techniques such as liquid penetrant, radiography, and ultrasonics.  Responsibilities will grow to include conceiving, planning, managing and/or conducting materials test projects.  Occasional travel may be required to support customers with standard or developmental NDE techniques.  Candidate may be assigned various tasks such as mechanical engineering tasks in support of system design, system build-up, component testing, experimental design and analyis, pressure vessel system engineer, and testing of materials.  Applicable knowledge and background experience is required.  Must be a U.S. Citizen.  Must posses a valid state driver's license.  Must pass a federal background investigation.  Must submit to pre-employment drug testing.  Must be able to occasionally work non-typical schedules in hot, dusty and confined spaces.

BS degree in Engineering or a Materials Science/Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering program and four (4) years related experience, or MS degree in Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering discipline with two (2) years of related experience, or a Ph.D. in in Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering discipline.  Current ASNT or NAS410 certification(s) in at least one of the following disciplines is required: radiographic testing; liquid penetrant testing; ultrasonic testing; or visual and optical testing.  Certification in more than one of these categories is preferred.  Highly valued skills include: theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience in materials characterization and testing (SEM/EDS, optical microscopy and mechanical testing); and outstanding verbal and written communication skills in the English language;  knowledge of structure-property relationships of aerospace alloys, particularly stainless steels, metallurgical failure analysis methodology, welding processes, corrosion of aerospace alloys, XRF and other analytical techniques.  

Essential Functions:


Physical requirements are: sitting for an extensive periods of time.  Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency.


Will be required to work inside and may be requested to travel as required by management.  All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards.


Computer work required.  Knowledge of Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, and MS Project is necessary.  Use of calculator, printer, fax, scanner, telephone, and other standard office equipment is required.  


Work schedule depends on hours required to complete scheduled tasks which may include temporary shift work to accommodate testing requirements and some occasional travel.  Normal working hours are nine (9) hour per day with some flexibility based on pre-approval.  A condensed work schedule, allowing alternate Fridays off, is typically in use for each two week pay cycle (9-80 schedule).


Must be able to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.  Must work well under pressure to meet deadline requirements.  Dress must be appropriate for the position and not pose a safety risk or hazard to the employee or others in accordance with NASA and Company policies. Must be a U.S Citizen.  Must possess a valid state drivers license. Must pass a Federal background investigation.  Must be able to pass a physical examination as determined by the NASA White Sands Test Facility and the Company for the job classification.  Must submit to pre-employment drug testing. Must maintain site access to NASA facilities and computer systems.
