Senior Packaging Engineer job in Detroit at ABF Freight

General Description of Duties:

Provide and direct packaging consulting service for ABF Freight customers. Design specifications, performance testing, distribution of packing/material, and handling solutions for product damages experienced in route. Enhance shipper/carrier relationship through specialized customer service, and provide internal operational support by making the freight we haul more compatible with our system requirements.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:

Job duties include, but are not limited to the following:
* Monitor and identify high claims cost accounts, and determine means of minimizing damage, maximizing handling efficiency and remaining sensitive to cost implications
* Direct, advise, and instruct terminal personnel and shippers on the best methods of packaging and material handling
* Research, prepare and provide pertinent account profile data in relation to damage claims history and trends
* Assist Claim Prevention Managers in cost containment by working with individual accounts to reduce overall claims cost
* Travel to terminals and customers' manufacturing locations to assist in packaging/material handling development
* Discuss damage problems with personnel and customers and develop needed corrective action plan for problem resolution
* Make needed recommendations with CAD/CAM diagrams, charts, or written documentation and continue to monitor progress of the account and implemented changes
* Maintain a positive attitude in a highly intense environment
* Work in a team setting to accomplish department goals
* Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:
* Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering, required
* Experience in manufacturing, warehousing, and transport processes, preferred
* Knowledge of material sciences and design and costing capability
* Knowledge of Bill of Lading Contract, NMFC, CFR 49, UN Packaging standards
* Ability to derive suggestions and recommendations that will allow for successful integration of specific commodities into our system
* Interpersonal and motivational skills
* Available to travel, as needed
* Must be detail oriented and enjoy a fast paced, multi-tasking, customer service minded environment
* Must have excellent verbal and written communications and organizational skills
* Must display sense of urgency, ability to work under pressure, with attention to detail
