Environmental Scientist/Project Manager

GDIT’s Science & Engineering group has an immediate position for a qualified candidate to provide project management, scientific and technical support to environmental monitoring projects and special studies for the EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO). This full-time position is located onsite at GDIT’s Alexandria office (6361 Walker Lane); however, teleworking may be considered.

The Project Manager will lead a team of scientists and IT specialists providing scientific, logistical, quality assurance, statistical, data management and technical writing support to plan, implement and report on environmental monitoring projects and special studies being led by EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office including the Water Quality Survey of the Great Lakes, the Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network, the Great Lakes Biology Monitoring Program, the Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program, and the Great Lakes Fish Monitoring and Surveillance Program. 


  • Provide technical expertise, data management, and quality assurance support to environmental monitoring projects
  • Assist with planning, implementation, documentation and reporting on environmental monitoring with a focus on water quality, biological monitoring, and coastal wetlands
  • Conduct data analysis and interpretation with statistical rigor to determine and report on status and trends
  • Write and review technical reports, quality assurance project plans, sampling designs, and SOPs
  • Oversee project management including cost estimation, financial tracking and reporting and human resource management
  • Serve as primary contact with EPA clients
  • Interface with environmental scientists, IT staff and other technical personnel to develop tools and applications to support environmental monitoring data collection, assessment, analysis and reporting
  • Provide policy analysis and assist in writing guidance
  • Assist in monthly progress reporting
  • Manage and maintain working files and deliverables into SharePoint sites and other information management systems

Qualifications (Required Experience and Skills)

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years professional experience or Master’s degree with 8+ years of professional experience related to Environmental Science (Chemistry, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources, or related fields). Ph.D. is highly preferred
  • Experience in environmental monitoring and assessment, field data collection, and laboratory analyses
  • Experience analyzing data, reporting and publishing on water quality and environmental conditions
  • Experience working with quality assurance and quality control practices in the field and/or lab; experience in EPA quality requirements is beneficial
  • Experience in developing and implementing standard operating procedures
  • Effective communication skills to interact with clients, business unit personnel and team members
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and creative thinking skills
  • Excellent technical writing capabilities (applicants must submit a writing sample)
  • Strong presentation skills to present to individuals and groups
  • Project management and staff management experience
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and switch between tasks quickly
  • Willingness to travel (less than 5% of the time)
  • Experience publishing on water quality in the Great Lakes a plus
