Associate VP for Student Affairs & Dean of Students

University is seeking an energetic, collaborative leader for core components of Student Affairs and to serve as Dean of Students. Strategic vision and organizational excellence are required, as is commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity.  This position reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and is a key member of the leadership team for Student Affairs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise core Student Affairs elements including community standards, civic involvement, volunteerism and service learning, commuter services, housing and residential learning. Collaborate on advising for student government and programming. While primary responsibility is at the main campus in Glassboro, this position also includes oversight of relevant services for Rowan’s Camden campus and programs at our partner Rowan Colleges.
  • Lead organizational evaluation and improvement in line with established University values and priorities and newer initiatives such as those focused on well-being and experiential education.
  • Identify, design, and use data to improve student programming, services, opportunities, and outcomes and contribute to a culture of assessment and quality improvement.
  • Provide leadership in appeals processes for student conduct and other non-academic issues and grievances as determined by current policy and practice.
  • Engage in sound decision-making informed by policy, law, and unique attributes of a given situation.
  • Translate understanding of obstacles students face on- and off-campus to succeed in college into intervention strategies to boost college completion and student satisfaction
  • Provide appropriate response to critical and urgent campus and student situations including through the STAT and Cares teams; ensure coordination of case management and resolution for individual student cases.
  • Interface with the Wellness Center and Counseling and Psychological Services to coordinate programming and incident response.
  • Provide campus leadership and contribute to an informed campus on issues of student navigation of the University, diversity and inclusion, and resources and strategies to support students; serve as an advocate for students (individually and collectively).
  • Provide excellent staff supervision and development including ability to provide direct feedback and professional development action plans.
  • Navigate highly charged, political situations with steady and responsive leadership.
  • Plan and manage budget including discretionary funds for student issues in consultation with Vice President and in line with Divisional and University policies and priorities.
  • Collaborate with other areas of Student Affairs (including Student Success and Enrollment Management teams) and with other Divisions and constituencies on campus (Academic Affairs; Facilities; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; General Counsel; Public Safety; Government and External Relations; Wellness Center; University Relations; etc.).
  • Provide leadership for the adoption of best practices for campus technology for student support (Starfish; numerous Campus Labs tools; Maxient) within Student Affairs.
  • Provide visible, dynamic leadership at the University in general and specifically for events such as orientations, admissions events, commencement-related events, etc.
  • Frequent night and weekend work is required (e.g., attend Student Government Association meetings Monday evenings; respond to scheduled and emergent student and University events and incidents as needed).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate required at time of appointment, preferentially in higher education, student personnel services, counseling, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and ability to tailor communication to myriad audiences (students, parents, executive leadership, faculty, student affairs professionals, external audiences, etc.).
  • At least 5 years of progressive administrative leadership in Student Affairs with significant budgetary and management experience, preferably in areas related to this position including residential learning, student conduct, Dean of Students office, and/or diversity and inclusion.
  • Prior institutional-level leadership and Dean of Students experience preferred.
