Job Description

Position Title:

Substitute Teacher


Non Exempt /Hourly Part-time As Needed

Reports To:

Bright Start Director

Job Purpose

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for filling in for classroom teachers in the event the classroom teacher is absent from work.  The Substitute Teacher is responsible for daily planning, management and supervision of the classroom and children.  Substitute Teachers are generally assigned a classroom assistant. Substitute Teachers will ensure that all parents, children’s and classroom staff concerns are appropriately addressed and will notify the director of these concerns.   


Duties/Responsibilities= Assist and supervise children during all activities, Provide counseling to children when social, academic and/or adjustment problems arise, Implement weekly curriculum and developmentally appropriate activities for the children, Ensure that appearance, cleanliness and safe environment of classroom is properly maintained, Assist children with meal times and cleanup, Follow daily schedules, Be a role model for children and co-workers, Complete daily reports, Be a good communicator, Dress appropriately, Maintain confidentially, Accept temporary work assignments, Report to director any case of suspected child abuse or neglect, Handle discipline promptly and in accordance with Bright Start policy on discipline, Assist with diapering, potty training and changing of soiled clothes as needed, ensure classroom medication schedule is followed, Meet prospective families, Inform the Director of any safety concerns or maintenance needs, Responsible for knowing the policies of the center, Maintain records, Inform Director of children that are sick or any health concerns, Maintain regulations, Attend all mandatory meetings, Substitute Teacher will oversee the work of the assistant teacher, Contribute in housekeeping chores, Maintain professional attitude, Communicate with parents on a daily basis

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED at least 19 years old, 60 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or nine quarter hours in courses related to child care/child development, from birth to age 6 or one year of child development experience in a nursery school or licensed day care center and 30 semester hours of credits from an accredited college or university with six semester or nine quarter hours in course related directly to child care/child development from birth to six or completion of completion of credentialing program approved by DCFS

Desired Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications plus  an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and previous experience working directly with children


Pass all pre-employment drug screens and background clearances, Driving clearances, basic computer skills, Enough physical strength to provide direct supervision and assistance to children in classroom, Standing for particularly long periods of time


Must have a warm, friendly personality, be sensitive to feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the philosophy of Bright Start, Ability to understand instructions, follow basic guidelines
