Systems and Infrastructure Administration
Selects methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.
Gives presentations to associated team and other technical units.
Evaluates new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost / benefit analyses.
May lead a team of systems / infrastructure professionalsThe system administrator will provide operational support for computational, application, and storage systems that support specialized research needs for multiple laboratories in the Center for Integrative Neuroscience.
This includes the application of advanced Linux, storage, and networking knowledge to the procurement, installation, monitoring, and maintenance of physical hardware, operating systems, and software.
The system administrator partners with faculty, staff, and with Central IT to ensure that research needs are met within budgetary constraints and in compliance with institutional policies for security and privacy.
The system administrator serves as an expert resource to lab members to troubleshoot issues with Linux operating systems, software installation, and configuration, data access and protection, and system performance for both server and desktop Linux systems. The system administrator works independently and collaborates as needed with other system administration professionals and institutional technology staff.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.our placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.The salary range for this position is $132,400 - $198,600 (Annual Rate).To learn more about the benefits of working at UCSF, including total compensation, please visit:Department DescriptionThis position is within the Department of Physiology at UCSF and will provide support to collaborating scientists and members of the world-class UCSF Neuroscience Community.
The position supports a core group of independent faculty (and their collaborators) who are carrying out cutting edge research into brain function.
Our goals include understanding how the brain works in healthy individuals, how normal brain functions are altered in disease, and how treatments can be developed to correct those alterations.
Our groups are highly collaborative and strive to provide a friendly and supportive work environment.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.5 years experience managing computational and storage hardware in a research environment5 years experience managing computational and storage software (including Ubuntu, ZFS, Samba, NFS ) in a research environmentSelf-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrates problem-solving skills.
Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.Advanced understanding of Linux system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet research computational and storage needs.Expert knowledge of network configuration and services including DNS, Firewall rules, Subnets, Gateways, NAT, DHCP, VLANS.
Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.Demonstrated experience with advanced scripting and with systems automation using Ansible or similar framework to perform system maintenance and administration.Knowledge of and experience with security and privacy requirements in a research environment and the use of technical and operational controls to achieve compliance.
Preferred QualificationsServer room management experienceKnowledge of load balancing and cooling systems (APC, Rittal, etc.).General knowledge of other areas of IT.
Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution.
