Job Description

Overview

The Controller is responsible for directing, managing, performing and/or coordinating the work of a number of finance and accounting staff in all aspects of accounting and financial reporting for CNI companies. This position is also responsible for adhering to CNI Management’s weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly reporting requirements, as assigned. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

ALL LEVELS:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible for the integration of CNI Core Competencies into daily functions, including: commitment to integrity, knowledge/quality of work, supporting financial goals of the company, initiative/motivation, cooperation/relationships, problem analysis/discretion, accomplishing goals through organization, positive oral/written communication skills, leadership abilities, commitment to Affirmative Action, reliability/dependability, flexibility and ownership/accountability of actions taken.

Responsible for accounting including oversight of monthly close, all general ledger entries, fixed asset accounting review of billings, revenue, payroll and expense postings, interfaces with other systems, reconciliation of accounts including resolving discrepancies and investigating variances, sub ledger maintenance, interpreting and analyzing results and reporting to management.

Responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and preparing all weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports, budgets and forecasts, bank compliance reporting and financial trends. This includes company consolidation and elimination entries. Adherence to closing deadlines is critical. Reporting includes compliance reports, board reporting and operational reporting. 

Communicates and distributes financial results and analysis to management, auditors and external agencies as requested. Ensures all financial reports are accurate, clear, and concise and meet users’ needs. Works with IT Department on report creation, documentation and maintenance for assigned financial reports.

Supervises and coaches accounting group employees as assigned and works closely will all other Finance Managers. This includes management, training and development. 

Understands, researches and applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and works with others in finance to interpret and apply Federal Government’s Cost Accounting Standards and Federal Acquisition Regulations. Maintains proper documentation for all required audits. 

Uses an understanding of accounting systems and works on project teams for assessments, reviews, selection of systems/modules, implementation and testing including upgrades. 

Works with other Controllers, Finance Managers, Finance Director and stakeholders in development of budgets and forecasts from the project level, to division, to legal entity to consolidated budgets. Assists with budget design and manager education on how budgets work in the accounting system. Conducts required analysis on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. Monitors and analyzes stated key performance indicators and trends; provides recommendations for savings and efficiencies. Forecasts and models rate information for allocations for opportunities, proformas and pricing. Assists in creation of provisional rates.

Generates and assists in the development of policies, processes and procedures related to CNI’s accounting operations. Provides beneficial suggestions and recommendations for departmental changes and improvements. Develops and maintains systems, policies and processes for sufficient internal control that verify the integrity of all systems and data for financial reporting. 

Responsible for the ongoing management, training and development of assigned staff members, including interns. 

Assists with a variety of external and internal audits.

Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources in a professional, timely and accurate manner.  Manages multiple projects and deadlines, including the ability to prioritize tasks. Provides superior customer service. 

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company. Relies on judgment and experience to plan and accomplish goals. 

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

LEVEL TWO: 

Works with Finance Director to develop and maintain systems and controls which verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data for financial reporting.

Works with finance management to create and present all areas of financials analysis to stakeholders, board members and outside parties as requested. 

Reviews, researches and ensures all tax filings for all companies are completed accurately and timely. 

Works on due diligence and implementation teams for acquisitions.

LEVEL THREE: 

Responsible for all elimination and consolidation entries required to close the books. 

Researches, recommends and applies complex accounting regulations.  

Works closely with the Legal Department on documentation needed for banking agreements, operating agreements, purchasing agreements, leases, etc. providing insight and recommendation on all financial matters.

Works with the Operation of Corporate Treasury department including cash flow monitoring, forecasting and debt compliance. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field of study. Must meet minimum years of experience requirement as specified below or equivalent combination of education / experience. Strong business experience required with demonstrated work in reporting, budgeting and general accounting work.  Government contractor accounting experience a plus. Knowledge of computer applications with advanced knowledge of Excel preferred including graphs, pivot tables, etc. 

Controller I:   Required degree and five (5) years of experience.

Controller II:  Required degree and eight (8) years of experience. CPA and/or Master’s preferred. Past supervisory experience required. Experience with COSO/SOX and/or public company reporting preferred. Public accounting experience preferred.

Controller III: Required degree and ten (10) years of experience. CPA or Master’s required. Past

           supervisory experience required. Experience with COSO/SOX and/or public company

           reporting preferred.  Public accounting experience required.

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP), and internal control systems

Operational knowledge and understanding of accounting systems and interaction of accounting systems modules

Proven ability to perform under pressure and to adjust plans to meet changing needs and requirements

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

Controller I:   CPA preferred

Controller II:  CPA required

Controller III: CPA or Master’s required

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and operations. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as financial ratios, discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to define problems, solutions, perform risk assessments and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
