Public Improvement Inspector (Step I, II, III)

Performs field inspections and documentation of Capital improvement Projects and construction projects to ensure compliance with approved construction documents and mandated standards.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a cover letter & resume.
* Inspects Capital Improvement Project construction sites for compliance with construction documents and mandated standards and subdivision development.
* Reviews proposed construction plans and specifications and provides written comments/corrections.
* Prepares daily inspection reports; Maintains files and records, construction plans record drawings.
* Serves as liaison between engineering services, construction services, and other utility department teams to provide seamless flow of projects.
* Meets with contractors to review construction progress, specifications, and contract drawings.
* Assures trenching/shoring and traffic control procedures are being followed.
* Meets with City staff to coordinate safe and thorough shutdowns.
* Answers inquiries from the general public regarding assigned projects.
* Attends pre-construction and project coordination meetings to review project expectations and construction progress.
* Interprets, explains and enforces city policies and procedures regarding technical standards, specifications, and ordinances.
* Compiles data and information for reports, cost estimates, change orders and revisions, and construction progress payment.
* Verifies construction staking and adherence to construction plans.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Public Improvement Inspector I
Education, training and Experience Guidelines
High school diploma or equivalent. Six (6) months of full-time experience in civil engineering design, construction, inspection or maintenance and operations for street, drainage, water and/or wastewater systems. OR any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of:
* Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook etc.).
* Internet browser, email - desktop and portable devices, iPad.
* Level, transit, city vehicle, GPS equipment, computer, radio, handheld tools.
Skill in:
* Providing excellent customer service through telephone, e-mail, and face-to-face interactions.
* Coordinating multiple tasks, obligations, and deadlines.
* Meeting deadlines and following up on action items.
* Use of various office machines: computer, mobile devices, faxes machine, multi-line phones, printers/copiers, etc.
* Safely operating a motor vehicle in construction environments.
* Reading contract documents, construction drawings, and specifications.
* Basic mathematics - algebra and geometry.
* Interpreting policies and procedures.
* Understanding city ordinances, policies, procedures, OHSA regulations.
* Water, wastewater, streets, and drainage construction.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Have or Obtain a TCEQ Class D Water Operators license or TCEQ Class D Wastewater Treatment Operators License or TCEQ Class I Wastewater Collections License (within 1 year of hire)
Have or Obtain TEEX Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Training Primary Course (Primary Course every 3 years or renewal course) or pre-approved equal.
