We are seeking a full-time Research Specialist  which is available immediately in the laboratory of Jennifer K. Lee, MD and Lee J. Our group has a collective h-index of over 110 and 35,000 citations (Google Scholar). We perform state-of-the-art and innovative experiments using a preclinical animal model and human induced-pluripotent stem cell (IPSC) culture to study brain injury mechanisms and potential treatments for newborn babies that suffer low oxygen supply at birth (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy). Our NIH-supported research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and pharmacologic/genetic therapeutics to reduce the risk of cell death and permanent brain injury that causes neurological and cognitive disorders. The technology that we use includes precision, stereotaxically-guided brain nucleus lesioning, fMRI, viral-mediated conditional transgenic manipulations, in vivo and high-throughput screening of small molecules, and human IPSC-derived oligodendrocyte and neuron cell death mechanism assessments in cell culture.

The Research Specialist will conduct innovative and impactful cell and molecular biology work that can eventuate in high impact publications with the hope of targeting journals such as Cell, Neuron, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and Science. The responsibilities will include neural cell culture, cell transfection, biochemical assays (spectrophotometric, fluorogenic, luminescence), western blotting and immunoprecipitation, DNA damage assays, histology, and immunohistochemistry. A familiarity with brightfield, epifluorescence, and confocal microscopy is desirable. Other duties will include preparing brain fixatives and assisting with piglet animal perfusions

Minimum Requirements (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field. 
  • 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

*JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Good oral communication skills in English and a collaborative and cooperative team spirit are required.
  • High priority candidates need to have, at a minimum, experience with cell culture, protein and DNA methods, and neuropathology, including microscopy (conventional and confocal) and cell counting skills.
