What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. R&D Engineer 3 ($115,500-194,900) The successful candidate will be a member of the Low-Level RF Team and help develop and implement FPGA designs, FPGA-based software radio RF control systems. This work involves the development and design of custom PCBs as well as the development of the HDL for these systems. Interaction and coordination with other engineers and technicians on the LLRF team as well as close cooperation with other accelerator systems groups (software, instrumentation and accelerator physics) is expected. R&D Engineer 4 ($138,700-240,500) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will independently develop and direct low-level RF systems projects, provide RF controls technical guidance and support to accelerator projects and provide technical and operational guidance to Low level RF technicians and engineers in installation, integration and operation of RF control systems. with moving parts. R&D Engineer 3 * Demonstrated success in design and development of high speed digital printed circuit boards utilizing FPGAs, DRAM and data converters.
* Demonstrated success with HDL design of complex signal processing and/or software radio systems including coding, synthesizing and simulating of RTL implementations in FPGAs.
* Demonstrated experience with applying and demonstration of engineering design cycle principles: requirements gathering, design, and implementation, debugging, testing, and documentation.
* Displays a substantial and significant record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, or technical products.
* Contributed as a leader in an organizational unit to goal setting, planning, and overall direction.
* Demonstrated ability to define deliverables and lead projects for organizational and/or business unit initiatives and/or new technology product line strategies.
* Availability for rotating on-call, working after hours when required.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4: * Demonstrated experience of leading a technical team (>5) of people for at least five years.
* Demonstrated record of authoring reports and/or publications of major importance, frequently with considerable impact within the engineering/scientific community.
* Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate new Laboratory-wide technical capabilities.
* Demonstrated ability to serve in a consultative role to senior-level Laboratory management and/or governmental management representatives.
Desired Qualifications: * RF Systems design experience.
* Real-time system programming experience with VxWorks or RTEMS. Programming experience in Tcl/Tk, C, C++, Java, LabVIEW and MATLAB.
* Accelerator systems experience in particular RF systems and RF control.
* Control system design and implementation experience using FPGAs.
* High-speed data convertor (both analog-digital and digital-analog) design experience.
* Experience with all aspects of project management.
* Experience in the design and development of software radio systems.
* Knowledge of control & data acquisition theory and instrumentation hardware.
* Signal processing system design using FPGAs.
* Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a minimum of a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. is preferred. Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 4 level: Position requires a minimum of a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. is preferred. Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
