ROLE SUMMARY

The Director Patient Access provides leadership and direction for all patient access functions to ensure financial viability of the organization and outstanding customer service.  This position directs the organizational and administration operations of the following units: Pre-Registration, Registration, Cashier, Financial Counseling, Patient Transport and oversight of the Valet Parking services.  With leadership and direction, this position ensures that services provided meet the needs or our customers through ease of access and timely and accurate collection of patient information.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for employee selection, orientation, training/development, performance reviews, disciplinary action, work assignments, and for achieving CRMC’s standards for customer service and employee engagement/retention.
  2. Ensures accurate collection of patient demographic information that supports timely billing of receivables. 
  3. Provides an environment that meets or exceeds the expectations of our customers, with a wide variety of external and internal customers, which attains outstanding Patient Satisfaction.  Remains current in knowledge of patient flow to ensure timely access to care.
  4. Responsible for providing financial information to the patient at the point of service, including up front cash collections and providing patients with estimates for care provided.
  5. Creates a referral process for those patients that have financial need, to the financial counselors, Community Navigator for potential payor source other than self-pay, including the possibility of charity care.
  6. Requires extensive knowledge of payor contracts to meet all billing requirements for third party payors, including eligibility of and pre-authorization for services, ensuring reimbursement for services provided. 
  7. Ensures compliance with applicable policies and procedures, including regulatory patient rights and billing compliance.  Reviews, processes and assesses accuracy of those policies and procedures to ensure regulatory standards are maintained. 
  8. Accountable for ethical, legal and professional responsibilities related to Patient Access, Financial Counseling and patient rights as it pertains to registration and financial counseling functions.
  9. Responsible for achieving budget targets to provide an environment of performance improvement and cost reduction through the use of available tools.
  10. Partners with leadership in the organization, for developing and implementing strategies beneficial to Cheyenne Regional in developing consistency and accuracy of claims processing and receivables management to ensure financial viability for the organization.
  11. Responsible for project management; assesses work activities and allocates resources appropriate for start-up operations, understands complexities and needs to build, maintains a new business.
  12. Provides operational leadership and has budget responsibilities. 
  13. Adheres to established leadership competencies, service standards and reinforces excellence in those standards with subordinates.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Expertise of computerized AR/ADT systems
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with all levels of personnel and patients
  • Proven knowledge of federal, state and payor billing requirements in order to achieve compliance with all regulations as it pertains to healthcare billing and coding
  • Outstanding customer service that meets or exceeds organizational customer service expectations.
  • Demonstrate behaviors consistent with Cheyenne Regional’s purpose, vision and values, management leadership expectations and service standards
  • Thorough knowledge of Patient Accounting processes, information systems, vendor contracting

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field or five years of experience in healthcare financial management
  • Experience in management of patient access process, including pre-registration, financial counseling and the revenue cycle for hospital organizations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in healthcare finance
  • Five years or proven leadership/management experience of greater than 10 employees in a healthcare related field
  • Certification in National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM)
