Surface Chemistry is one of the world’s leading specialty chemical manufacturers of surfactants, polymers and solvents, providing innovative surface chemistry technologies and solutions in industries such as agro, asphalt, cleaning, fabric care, mining, personal care and petroleum.

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for capex, process engineering and process safety activities of the facility to support safe and sustainable operations and be prepared to meet future business needs.   Core Member of the Site Leadership Team

Reports To: Site Director

Direct Reports: Sr. Process Engineer (1), Process Engineers (2), Sr. Project Leader (3), Automation Engineers (3), Process Safety Manager (1)


  • Supports the Site Director by ensuring the Morris Site Master Plan is kept current along with the associated 5-Year CAPEX long range plan 
  • Manages the Plant’s Capital budget (CAPEX), prioritizes and schedules projects
  • Ensures accurate and timely CAPEX forecasting for entire project portfolio
  • Facilitates monthly site CAPEX meetings and provides output to the BUSC Asset Management Director
  • Identifies projects, prepares cost estimates and ARs, manages project implementations (i.e. construction, contractors, specifies equipment, procurement, start-up etc.)
  • Collaborates with P&E to manage projects which are determined to be of the complexity and size which requires centralized engineering office to manage
  • Performs design reviews, pre start-up safety reviews, and initiates MOC’s as needed
  • Drive the PSM standards and improvement process to ensure PHAs are completed, action items from PHAs are completed
  • Maintains all engineering standards and procedures for the Morris plant
  • Allocates Engineering resources to identify and implement fixed and variable cost improvement projects
  • Provides daily engineering and troubleshooting support for plant operation, plant equipment and processes and utilities equipment in support of production engineers
  • Manages Engineering Department in a manner that promotes interdepartmental cooperation, and ensures that department goals are met
  • Coach/mentors onsite Engineers through career progression
  • Communicates and promotes the approved BU-strategy and develops plans and budgets for plant engineering activities
  • Radiation Safety Officer for the site

 Environment, Health, Safety, and Security Specific Responsibilities:       

  • Understands and helps implement the SBU HSES / Responsible Care Policy and related objectives
  • Aware of potential environmental, health, safety and security impacts in area of responsibility and the consequences if an upset occurs
  • Understands and implements any parts of the Houston Environmental Compliance Plans, Waste Management Plans and Emergency Response Plan that applies to area of responsibility
  • Participates in the site's on-going Pollution Prevention Process
  • Participates in the site’s HSE&S processes and training activities
  • Is knowledgeable and complies with all state, federal, and local regulations and complies with AkzoNobel standards and directives
  • Ensures sustainability assessments are done on projects according to the requirements of the corporation


  • B.S. Engineer, preferably Chemical or Mechanical
  • 10+ years’ of direct management experience and equivalent leadership roles
  • 6-8 years related chemical manufacturing operations experience and managing and Engineering Department
  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Six Sigma and good working knowledge of SAP a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to plan, communicate, and execute CAPEX projects
  • Ability to lead and work effectively in a team environment 
  • Strong safety background
