Environmental Chemist

GDIT is seeking a mid-level environmental chemist to support our long-standing contracts with the USEPA. The position primarily involves support of Clean Water Act programs, with an emphasis on the development, validation, and implementation of organic and inorganic test methods for use in monitoring programs and NPDES permitting. It also includes providing chemistry expertise in support of other EPA programs, including CERCLA, RCRA, SDWA, and broad regional programs (e.g., Great Lakes, Chesapeake Bay, Gulf of Mexico)


Specific responsibilities include:  

•        Interact daily with clients, researching answers to questions from the public, state and Federal agencies, and others, about analytical methods for compliance monitoring associated with the Clean Water Act.

•        Supervise method development and evaluation projects, solicit laboratory services from commercial laboratories, track progress, and oversee budgets.

•        Review environmental analytical data against project requirements, using established review procedures, interact with laboratories to resolve issues, and assist other staff in assembling databases of results.

•        Assist with preparation of presentations, posters, and written reports.



•        Bachelor’s degree in environmental chemistry or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)

•        Eight or more years of experience in applied environmental chemistry or environmental analyses

•        Experience working with modern laboratory instrumentation, including GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, AA, ICP, and ICP/MS

•        Strong written and verbal communication skills (record of publications and/or presentations preferred)

•        Skilled in use of MS Word, Excel, and Access

•        Self-starter, but team player able to take direction and carry out projects with minimal supervision

•        Must pass a pre-employment drug screening test

•        Must be legally able to work in the United States


•        Field sampling experience

•        Experience using EPA test methods for determination of organic and inorganic pollutants

•        Understanding of federal environmental laws and regulations, particularly CWA and NPDES permitting.

•        Firm understanding of quality assurance and control aspects of sampling and analysis methods

•        Federal contracting experience, including responding to RFPs

•        Be able to take direction and carry out projects as directed with minimal supervision.

•        Demonstrate proven experience (with tangible outcomes and results), a can-do attitude, and strong communication and interpersonal skills

The position is based in GDIT's Alexandria, Virginia office, with expected travel to conferences across the country on a periodic basis. Local travel to client offices in Washington, DC and to other GDIT facilities in the Alexandria area and Baltimore is anticipated.
