GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Reading Specialist acts as a resource person to promote student and teacher growth in learning and teaching reading, and as a reading instructor for students in need of remediation. The Reading Specialist works collaboratively with teachers to implement a quality program that is research-based and differentiated for student needs.
This position will grow to support teachers by modeling instructional strategies and lessons, developing and modifying lesson plans, supporting all students in a variety of ways to learn reading/literacy, and expanding teacher and parent understanding of current reading/literacy research and knowledge.
This position will work collaboratively with the enrichment teacher and grade level teachers to design and assist in execution of an MTSS system for reading/literacy.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid certification as Reading Specialist or Reading Teacher
- Reading Specialist/Interventionist/Coaching Experience (preferred)
- At least 5 years teaching experience
- Knowledge of current trends and best practices in reading/literacy instruction
- Ability to analyze and use data to design, modify, and evaluate curriculum, instruction, and assessment
CLASSIFICATION
This position is designated as a Teacher position subject to the Teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement, School Board Policy, and School Rules and Regulations.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching and Learning
- Spends the majority of time working with students in the area of reading/literacy support and remediation. The remainder of the time would be spent in classrooms working directly with teachers and students in the area of reading/literacy.
- Actively investigates and considers new ideas that improve teaching and learning and draws on current education policy and research in reading/literacy.
- Uses a variety of data to evaluate abilities and disabilities of students and works independently, and with classroom teachers/school staff to adjust their instruction to meet the needs of all students.
- Serves as a member of the district reading/literacy committee.
- Participates actively as a part of the school team, providing feedback on reading/literacy practice, analyzing data from multiple sources, making decisions to improve student learning, and being accountable for each student’s learning.
- Assists with evaluating students, identifying knowledge gaps and recommending/executing interventions and leads problem-solving discussions.
- Oversees reading/literacy assessment collection and provides feedback to administration on a monthly basis.
- Demonstrates quality lessons to individual teacher groups in a classroom setting.
- Helps design parent and family workshops to enhance learning at home and school.
- Assists teachers in designing formative and summative assessments to assess individual and group student learning in the area of reading/literacy.
- Regularly uses assessment data to develop, guide, and/or modify instruction to accommodate individual and student group needs within small group and classroom settings.
- Makes appropriate provisions for individual students who have particular learning differences or needs in the area of reading/literacy.
- Connects instruction to each student’s prior knowledge and experiences.
- Incorporates tools of development into planning and instruction, including strategies for making accessible to all learners.
- Participates in professional development opportunities, professional research, and reading of best reading/literacy practices.
- Designs formative assessments in reading/literacy that match learning objectives with assessment formats to evaluate learners’ knowledge and practice.
- Works independently and collaboratively to examine performance data in order to understand students’ progress and guide reading/literacy instruction.
- Engages students in understanding and identifying quality work and provides them with effective feedback to improve their work in reading/literacy.
- Models reading/literacy thinking and practice that guide students in examining their own thinking and reading/literacy practice.
- Works with teachers and school staff in implementing grading and reporting standards.
- Works with district ELA and Title 1 committees to develop and revise curriculum to meet student learning needs.
- Works with school administration to create a school-wide focus on goals for reading/literacy achievement.
- Assists with selection and creation of learning materials that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, and based upon principles of effective instruction.
- Trains staff on reading/literacy practices, curriculum, interventions, and data collection.
- Engages all students in developing higher-order critical thinking and practice in reading/literacy instruction.
- Performs any additional duties as assigned by building principal, which are consistent with the District 61 goals and mission.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Work days consistent with teacher’s contract.
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with appropriate endorsements.
- Teacher contract with salary and benefits defined by collective bargaining agreement.
