Designs and coordinates building structural systems across all seven IU campuses to ensure that specific architectural components are structurally sound. Develops project scope, prepares cost opinions and specifications, and completes project implementation. Works compatibly with colleagues across the University and outside contractors/vendors to ensure that open communication is occurring on relevant projects. Assists in long range planning and budgeting. Provides review of design work performed outside consultants.
Prepares design documents (plans and specifications) for building structural systems for in-house design. Reviews and critiques construction documents prepared by outside consultant. Researches and interprets current state and federal codes and design standards as well as University standards. Makes decisions based on the proper application of these standards using knowledge and expertise to all design concepts and renovations. Manages assigned projects and see through to completion. Participates in on-site inspections and examine structures for code compliance. Analyzes, reviews and problem solve issues. Performs field surveys and project inspections. Prepares project cost estimates and assists in long range planning and budgeting.
Provides technical advice to colleagues and staff across campuses. Develops a strong working knowledge of IU guidelines and processes as well as all campus locations and relevant departments/schools.
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering, Indiana PE licensure, and five years structural engineering experience in a construction, consulting engineering firm, governmental or institutional setting including: design, cost preparation, construction document preparation, project management and troubleshooting experience.
Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
Knowledge of all related codes including: national fire codes, ADA requirements, Indiana building and mechanical codes, ASCE 7 and SEI standards. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft products (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Autodesk products (including AutoCAD, Revit).
