We are looking for an enthusiastic, high-energy data center technician that has strong communication skills, an excellent work ethic, and a desire to learn and grow.
Responsibilities
Work under the direction of the Data Center Operations Manager to provide on-site support to maintain a data center and its hardware, including day-to-day moves and other IMAC work:
- Perform hands-on rack and stack of data center equipment and structured cabling installation.
- Assist with building suites within a co-location facility, including cabinet installation and equipment racking.
- Cabling current and new setups, including copper patching and fiber patching.
- Terminate cables in the data center, patch cords, and cross-connects, as well as troubleshoot and repair cabling and infrastructure problems as needed.
- Install new hardware such as switches, servers, storage devices, firewalls, and routers.
- Diagnose and repair server hardware (in conjunction with the IT Services Desk Team).
- Help monitor the data center environment, including power usage, rack capacity, network ports, and climate.
- Proactively check hardware alerts and single points of failure to ensure the data center is running optimally.
- Assist with security implementation and deployment.
- Decommission old hardware: uncable, remove from racks, and organize ecological disposal.
- Escort and assist 3rd party installers and adhere to established security policies.
- Manage hardware inventory and maintain a supply of spare equipment to ensure a rapid resolution for hardware repairs (SLA < 2h).
- Install and troubleshoot prefabricated fiber infrastructure.
- Update rack documentation and maintain accurate data center documentation, including assisting with other team-related administrative or operational tasks as needed.
- Schedule and facilitate installations and vendor meetings as needed.
- Exhibit leadership characteristics including strong communication skills, full understanding of internal policies, time management, dependability, and client focus.
- Be proactive and assist whenever possible in either a project delivery or operations role.
- Interact and build an effective rapport with clients.
- Execute test procedures to ensure completeness of installations.
- Learn to plan and execute a subset of large data center design and build projects, including low-voltage cabling, network and server equipment installation, general equipment and cabling move, add, change (MAC), and circuit management.
Qualifications
- 1 to 3 years of relevant Data Center Operations, Data Center Technician, or Data Center Hardware Support experience is required.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal), organizational, presentation, and collaboration skills are essential.
- 1 to 3 years of data center-specific or similar experience working in critical facilities, performing hands-on buildout or day-to-day IMAC (rack and stack) work.
- Knowledge of low-voltage cabling infrastructure standards including Category 6 cabling, Category 6A cabling, OM3 fiber, OM4 fiber, and single-mode fiber.
- At least one year of hands-on server and network gear installation and move experience, including performing network patching (copper and fiber cabling) within a data center.
- A good understanding of data center operations and data center facilities.
- Ideal candidates will have some basic experience with IT construction or data center buildout, but this is not required.
- Basic understanding of all data center functions (production operations, network, server, storage, database, change control, disaster recovery/business recovery, help desk, systems management, and facilities) is desired.
- Any prior technology move, add, change (MAC) experience—ideally large-scale technology relocation—is a plus.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is preferred.
- Some experience with installation schedules, vendor management, and structured cabling infrastructure is a plus.
