Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide.

Location: Central Office801 W Prospector Pl, Lincoln, NE 68522

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00-4:30 Examples of Work

Under limited supervision, completes pre-audits, approves and/or posts documents to facilitate payment to vendors; reviews and processes employee expense reimbursement requests, compiles and completes expense transactions between State Agencies.

Audits financial and agency data for accuracy, code revenue and expenditures for the agency, journal entries, reconciliation of accounts, internal and external correspondence verbally and in writing, special projects, adheres to internal control procedures and other assigned duties.

Works closely with Financial Accounting Manager to make sure that assigned accounting duties are completed.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Associates degree in accounting, finance, business administration, statistics or related field and experience with accounting/financial management systems OR 2 years' experience with professional accounting procedures including working with accounting/financial management systems.

PREFERRED: Bachelors degree in Business Administration or related area; 12 hours of college Accounting credits. At least three years governmental accounting experience to include: preparing financial statements, reporting and monitoring financial position, auditing financial transactions, accounting for sales/manufacturing activities, completing research. Experience with an integrated financial system. Experience with Excel, Word and Access and major ERP systems such as JDE, People Soft, Oracle.

OTHER: At the time of interview written exam and Excel test may be given.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: professional accounting principles, theories, and practices; generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), practices and standards; research practices and techniques; budgeting techniques and methods; record keeping methods; word processing and spreadsheet computer software programs; computerized accounting software; federal and State laws and regulations applicable to accounting/finance operations.

Skill in: using mathematical methods or formulas to compare, analyze and present data; compiling data from multiple sources into a single, comprehensive document or report.

Ability to: apply the principles of accounting, statistics, and fiscal management; learn and apply the principles and concepts of specific agency programs, policies and operating details of an accounting system; prepare a budget; design reports and financial statements; compute and compile financial data involving the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and fractions; operate office equipment such as personal computers, photocopiers and desk calculators; manage funds and provide financial and budget recommendations; analyze data and draw conclusions; organize and present facts and opinions so others will understand; effectively communicate to exchange and elicit information.
