Research Data Analyst and Operations - Telecommute Considered

UnitedHealth Group’s Center for Health Care Research (CHCR), based in Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., seeks an outstanding and experienced research operations and data analyst to serve on a high-performing, close-knit team of innovative health care researchers and analysts working within a mission-driven, results-oriented, restless, and highly successful Enterprise.

The Center’s research supports UHG’s commitment to the development of a next-generation health system in a socially conscious manner and the implementation of actionable, practical, and timely policy and market solutions that can achieve universal coverage, affordability, better experiences for patients and physicians, and improved health outcomes.

The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and demonstrate strong analytic skills, strategic thinking; ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences; broad knowledge of health care data, policy, and markets; passion for health care transformation; and excellent judgment. The successful candidate will help manage the development and execution of a robust research agenda; analyze large administrative, claims, and clinical datasets; and support high-profile partnerships with prominent researchers at leading universities.

The Analyst will be responsible for data exploration and statistical analysis and assist researchers with study implementation and execution. The Analyst is responsible for creating analytic datasets and conducting descriptive and multivariable statistical analyses with appropriate quality checks and documentation. The Analyst will collaborate with a diverse array of data scientists, economists, and other research entities across the Enterprise, and serve as a consultant for external academic partners.

Monitor/Support Research Project Lifecycle, Timelines, and Resources

  • Manage proposal review and approval process
  • Work with legal and data partners to identify and execute necessary contracts for project initiation, maintenance, and completion
  • Manage vendor relationships and coordinate with legal and data partners to obtain required contract approvals, as needed
  • Monitor project scope and objectives to identify and resolve risks/issues and report progress to applicable stakeholders throughout the project life cycle, as needed (e.g., revised scope definition, scope creep)
  • Develop, document, and implement appropriate communications tools/techniques to ensure understanding and buy-in from applicable stakeholders (e.g., project status, metrics, outcomes, executive summaries, key milestones)
  • Ensure project scope, requirements and approvals comply with topic and data governance policies
  • Establish, develop, and maintain effective relationships with business partners and stakeholders (e.g., project team members, team leads, internal customers, functional SMEs, business partners, leadership)

Conduct Data Analysis and Verification for Internal Research Studies

  • Collaborate with internal research team on study design
  • Conduct queries, extract data and create analytic files using SQL
  • Produce descriptive and multivariable analyses using statistical software (e.g., SAS; STATA)
  • Maintain detailed documentation of data specifications and analytics
  • Review results of analyses to assess the validity of findings (e.g., identify outliers or unusual trends)
  • Support researchers in interpreting trends and analyses to draw relevant conclusions
  • Create tables and figures and provide key text and documentation for issue briefs, study reports, data visualization, and peer-reviewed manuscripts

Support Data Analysis and Verification for External Research Partners

  • Provide deep understanding of Enterprise data assets for academic partners
  • Conduct feasibility studies, data exploration, ad hoc analysis, and verification to support research studies
  • Triage data, software, and technical inquiries appropriately
  • Collaborate on dissemination activities including conference presentations and peer-reviewed manuscripts

Manage Research-Related Data Assets and Processes

  • Understand high-level attributes of different data assets and recognize the pros and cons of proposed analysis using respective data
  • Coordinate with data partners to manage data assets, including regular data refreshes, and ancillary data sources as needed, and access to the data environment
  • Participate in maintenance of project reference materials
  • Contribute to development of standardized processes for data quality

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Mathematics, Economics, Health Informatics, Health Policy, Business, Epidemiology, Data Sciences, or other quantitative field
  • 3+ years of experience with SQL and understanding of complex database structures
  • 3+ years of experience using statistical software packages (e.g., SAS, STATA or similar) for descriptive and multivariable analyses
  • 2+ years of experience with administrative health care claims data analytics
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • 2+ years of experience with documenting processes and practices, while effectively prioritizing multiple tasks, priorities, projects, and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with Visual Basic for Applications
  • Previous project management experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written, with senior executives
  • Experience with other applications, such as Python, R, or Tableau
  • Knowledge of data privacy and HIPAA standards
  • Experience working with Medicare standard analytical files

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $79,700 to $142,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
