The proposal development specialist is a key person in Indiana University's and IUPUI's efforts to maintain and increase external funding support for its research, education, and service missions. The position holder is responsible for working with principal investigators, project managers, co-investigators, unit professional and clerical staff, administrators, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research personnel, and other stakeholders to prepare and submit competitive proposals for external funding from federal, state, and local government agencies; industry; and private foundations. The proposal development specialist will insure that all proposals for external funding are consistent with sponsor and university requirements and ready for on-time submission. The purview of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is campus wide, so the proposal development specialist will be responsible for proposals emanating from any of the schools at IUPUI, including, but not limited to, the IU School of Medicine, the IU School of Nursing, the IU School of Informatics and Computing, the IU School of Liberal Arts, the IU Herron School of Art and Design, the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, and the Purdue School of Science. In addition, the proposal development specialist can expect periodic requests for proposal development support from investigators at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus, Indiana University Bloomington, and the regional campuses of Indiana University.The proposal development specialist is a key person in Indiana University's and IUPUI's efforts to maintain and increase external funding support for its research, education, and service missions. Job Summary

The Proposal Development Specialist will consult with investigators on the development of external funding proposals: manage and coordinate the proposal development process; meet with investigators as necessary or as requested; perform foundational research and data collection as necessary for specific funding opportunities; interpret agency missions, goals, programs, funding capabilities, and funding application requirements for investigator teams; advise investigators on best approaches to proposal development; communicate as necessary with sponsor and university personnel; communicate as necessary with project and proposal personnel at collaborating institutions; construct schedules for the production of proposal components; coordinate writing assignments for investigators; follow up with investigators to ensure that components are produced in a timely manner; edit and format technical and nontechnical proposal components for content, language, and clarity; draft letters of support when necessary; check investigator-produced components for compliance with sponsor requirements and responsiveness to sponsor review criteria; identify proposal areas to be strengthened by additional expertise such as evaluation and statistical design; collaborate with investigators and unit staff to construct proposal budgets and draft budget narratives; examine budgets to ensure compliance with sponsor and university cost regulations; assist investigators with university electronic routing and sponsor submission systems when necessary; assist investigators with post-routing corrections requested by the Office of Research Administration; confirm successful submission of proposals to sponsors; track post-submission status of proposals.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education and three years of experience in proposal and/or research writing and/or editing.

Combinations of education and related experience may be considered.

Demonstrated excellence in communication for academic purposes, including the ability to use language carefully and strategically. Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external audiences and work collaboratively and productively with university administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other shareholders from a variety of institutions and organizations from a variety of disciplines, and a variety of backgrounds. Advanced lay knowledge in multiple disciplines. Ability to seek out and find crucial information pertinent to proposal development using the internet. Ability to interpret and communicate sponsor requirements to others. Ability to translate others' ideas into persuasive text. Highly developed control over the rhetoric of proposals for project funding. Demonstrated excellent editing skills. Demonstrated excellent knowledge of proposal development and submission processes. Highly developed attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, concentrate with distractions, problem-solve, manage several projects simultaneously, and to work with hard deadline. Willingness and ability to learn continuously. Knowledge of academic institutional systems, particularly those at Indiana University. Well-developed ability to practice discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or research doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education. Experience in a higher education academic setting and in the context of applications for large grants from major federal and non-federal sponsors.
