Job Description Summary

Pike is looking to hire a college student to work as a Road Construction Intern as part of the Construction division for the 2016 summer.  Through an organized process the selected intern will be exposed to and trained on many aspects of our business operations.  The summer will be broken into three segments of 3-4 weeks each where the intern will be paired with an experienced employee to learn about each of the following areas:
 

  • Paving/construction – work with a paving/construction crew to learn about how construction and paving jobs are set up and run.The intern may assist with duties such as; manual labor, use of hand tools, directing and guiding traffic through construction sites, and possibly operating equipment.

  • Asphalt plant/Aggregate facility – the intern will learn about how the aggregate and asphalt material is produced and distributed within our own company as well as with Pike’s customers.The intern will participate and gain hands-on experience while learning about the operations of our plant/crusher divisions.

  • Quality Control – the intern will focus on the process of conducting tests on asphalt and aggregate materials to determine mix make up as well as composition and consistency with required specifications.The intern may also be provided with additional training and explanation of the process of monitoring temperature, thickness, density and overall condition of pavements during installation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Spend time in the field to learn about the daily work necessary to go into completing a project.

  • Carry out the instructions of Foreperson or Supervisor.

  • When necessary, must be able to shovel and rake materials.

  • May be asked to occasionally operate power broom, plate compactor, wheel barrow, pipe saws, pumps, generators, jack hammers, and/or vibratory roller.

  • Input test result data into computers in laboratories and remote locations.

Requirements

  • The selected candidate must be currently enrolled in a college degree program

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, high stress environment

  • Ability to work in a team setting

  • Construction work is determined by the project contracts and may include night work, and usually involves overtime.

  • Must have reliable transportation to commute to and from their work location, as well as between facilities and job sites when necessary.
