A Brief Summary of This Position:

The specialist position works with sites to oversee labor, installation, and the repair of equipment in our galvanizing and coatings facilities. The specialist will also train site operators and maintenance personnel on preventive maintenance procedures as well as assist in implementing those procedures as part of the Total Productive Maintenance program.  This position completes various types of shop documentation including inspection verification, installs and repairs industrial equipment systems, apparatus, and some electronic components of industrial machinery. Incumbent must follow electrical codes, manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and other specifications. Incumbent must be able to follow blue prints with ability to fabricate shop equipment & tools utilized in the galvanizing plants. Diagnoses malfunctioning equipment, such as galvanizing furnaces, Boilers, ARS systems, motors, and lighting fixtures, using test equipment, and replaces damaged or broken wires and cables, using hand tools.

Essential Functions:  

Electrical specialty:

  • Check finished part to electrical drawings.
  • Operate forklifts, welders, drill presses and other various shop equipment and machinery in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Participate in department functions, such as Lean teams, Safety, Peer Review, and Employee Training.
  • Complete various types of periodic maintenance including reports and inspection verification.
  • Install and repair control panels, electrical distribution systems, motors and various electrical circuits.
  • Ability to inspect and repair electrical components of cranes, furnaces and boilers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical issues with industrial equipment, including cranes, crane remote controls, variable frequency drives, temperature control systems, burner management systems, furnaces, and boiler control systems.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and electrical and electronic test equipment.
  • Working with sites to install, troubleshoot, and repair 3 phase (480v) motor circuits and control circuits in accordance with the National Electrical Code.

Mechanical Specialty:

  • Check finished part to blueprints.
  • Operate forklifts, welders, drill presses and other various shop equipment and machinery in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Participate in department functions, such as Lean teams, Safety, Peer Review, and Employee Training.
  • Complete various types of periodic maintenance including reports and inspection verification.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and use calipers and mechanical tools to assemble adjust and troubleshoot mechanical systems including but not limited to gearboxes and chain drive conveyers
  • Troubleshoot and repair overhead crane mechanical systems such as cable drums and hoist pulley systems
  • Troubleshoot mechanical system such as steam and hot water heating systems
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and electrical and electronic test equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of hydraulic / pneumatic equipment
  • Welding with fabrication experience.

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Operate a forklift provided they are qualified and certified under Valmont’s training program
  • Handle raw material both manually and with an overhead crane
  • Lead crew safety meeting on a daily basis during non-routine work assignments
  • Perform risk analysis/risk reduction activities on manufacturing processes as required
  • Participate in the management of change activities as required for project completion
  • Develop standard operating procedures and job safety analysis for new processes
  • Develop and train operators in the control of hazardous energy procedures for new processes

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Ability to effectively communicate, train, and supervise projects with shop and maintenance personnel, contractors, management.
  • Ability to understand all gauging and checking fixtures used in checking fabricated parts
  • A strong working knowledge of tape measure, thread gauges, micrometers, protractors, square combination and dial calipers
  • A strong working knowledge of electrical test equipment, meters and other electrical equipment
  • Ability to stand and move about the shop floor for at least half of the shift
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • One year of experience reading and interpreting blueprints or process sheets in a professional environment
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Installation and repair of Kettle Furnaces, Boiler systems, ARS systems, lighting systems, HVAC systems, powder coating equipment, hoists, cranes, and other production equipment.
  • One year of experience operating a forklift in a professional environment
  • One 30 hour OSHA safety class every 5 years of employment or equivalent Valmont Industries, Inc. safety program review

  • Ability to travel approximately 75-80%
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • 5+ Years Galvanizing experience.
  • Technical Degree in Industrial Maintenance
  • Licensed Electrician
  • Demonstrated results in Lean Manufacturing / Project management.
  • Extensive knowledge of hydraulic / pneumatic equipment
  • Welding with fabrication experience.
  • High level knowledge of welding/Certified Welder

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in the fabrication shop or plant environment. The incumbent is regularly required to stand, bend, squat, for extended periods of time.  Incumbent must be willing to travel to multiple facilities both domestically & internationally for project work.   Incumbent may be required to work extended shifts or off shift hours depending on individual plant production needs during particular jobs. Incumbent must be willing to work hand in hand with general contractors on projects,  as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.
