TEACHER ASSISTANT - Part Time

SUMMARY

The FREEdom School is a tuition-free, private (independent) micro-school serving approximately ten 9th grade students and ten 10th grade students. At The FREEdom School, we uphold four sacred values:

We are seeking an engaging, well-prepared, and caring Teacher Assistant who has the eagerness, patience, love, care, and skills to support the academic development of our students.

The position is part-time, working with one cohort of up to ten 9th graders, ideally one-on-one and with small groups of students. The Teacher Assistant plays a critical role in the lives of young people at the school as they will see them every day.

Responsibilities include:

1. Supporting during transitions and travel times.
2. Assisting in the following classes:
1. Ethnic Studies (English and History)
2. Physical Education
3. Any Flex/Free time during the school day

The ideal Teacher Assistant:

1. Expresses Care: Be dependable, listen, believe in students, be warm, and encourage.
2. Challenges Growth: Expect the best in students, stretch them to go further, hold them accountable positively, and help them reflect on mistakes.
3. Provides Support: Help students navigate through challenges, advocate for them, build confidence, and set boundaries.
4. Shares Power: Respect students, collaborate, include them in decisions, and let them lead.
5. Expands Possibilities: Inspire students to see possibilities for their future and expose them to new ideas and experiences.

The Teacher Assistant will ride in a 15-passenger van with students daily. The Navigator is the driver of this van.

Qualifications:

1. Experience working with students with disabilities.
2. Understanding that every student learns differently and requires accommodations for success.

COMPENSATION AND EXPECTED DAYS/HOURS/MONTHS OF COMMITMENT

This is an hourly, part-time position:

1. 30 weeks: September 16, 2024, through May 2, 2025
2. Compensation: $30 per hour
3. Approximately 20 hours per week (including 1 hour of prep time)
4. Monday through Friday

There is a possibility for the Teacher Assistant to stay on Wednesdays from 2:00pm-5:00pm for Staff Professional Development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Strong pedagogy in engaging young people.
2. Proven ability to listen and mentor young people positively.
3. Patience for students who may struggle to engage.
4. Collaborative spirit to work with other staff members.
5. Able to ride in the back of a 15-passenger van.
