About the Opportunity

This position’s base reporting location is in Wadsworth Township, Ohio with significant flexible work location opportunities and reports to the Supervisor of Transmission Security Technology and Engineering (TST&E).

An IT Security Operations Specialist works on the Transmission Security Technology and Engineering (TSTE team which is responsible for the 24/7 operation of security-related systems protecting FirstEnergy and the electric grid. This position works on the complete lifecycle for security-related systems such as firewalls, authentication systems, remote access VPN systems, PKI infrastructure, and endpoints protection. This role also supports and assists with implementing the cyber governance policies and controls as it relates to systems and services.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage and operate various security technologies including firewalls, web proxies, intrusion detection and prevention systems, anti-virus/anti-malware technologies, authentication and authorization systems, and cloud-based network security technologies.
  • Respond to 2nd/3rd level support requests that are related to security-related technologies.
  • Respond to out-of-hours operational issues and security incidents
  • Work on cross-functional teams to accomplish overall IT projects and objectives.
  • Ensure security-related systems meet all federal and state regulatory requirements where applicable.
  • An employee hired at a Level III or IV will be expected to perform the above responsibilities with greater proficiency and in a more independent manner.

An employee hired at the Specialist III or IV level will be expected to perform all the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner.  Further, the Specialist III or IV level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those listed above.

Qualifications at the Level II include:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Networking, or similar discipline with 2-4 years experience required.  A degree in another field, a certificate-level program, or non-degree work history with 4+ years of relevant experience will be considered.
    • Relevant experience includes, but not limited to: security tools and technologies, IT operations support, administration and maintenance of security technologies.
  • Preferred experience includes Fortinet, Juniper JunOS, Cisco ASA, Cisco ISE, Microsoft Defender/Defender ATP, CyberArk, and Microsoft Certificate Services.
  • Demonstrate mastery of IP-based enterprise-level networking including IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, IPSec, BGP, etc.
  • Able to participate in an on-call rotation responding to out-of-hours calls and alerts in support of security response, including on-site response out-of-hours.
  • Effective business communication skills which includes documentation and project status communication. Must compose well-written, professional documents and reports with minimal editorial and proofing support.
  • Work effectively with people at varying levels within an organizational hierarchy to accomplish tasks and goals
  • Works well within a professional team under supervision as to accomplish objectives and system resiliency while executing according to FirstEnergy’s Core Values.
  • Ability to travel on a frequent basis to other FirstEnergy buildings in the Akron area. Infrequent overnight business travel to locations throughout the FirstEnergy service territory (OH, PA, NJ, MD, WV) will be required of this position.

Qualifications at the Level III include the above, plus a minimum of 4-7 years professional-level experience required. In lieu of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience required.

  • Demonstration of independent execution is required.
  • Working knowledge of relevant work experience

Qualifications at the Level IV include a the above, plus a minimum of 7-10 years professional-level experience. In lieu of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience required.

  • Demonstrable subject matter expert knowledge in at least one major security technology system is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant work experience
