Description 

The student will be working closely with innovation technologists and leaders at the center, assisting in the various steps of innovation and idea development in a start-up like atmosphere. The student will assist with innovation work in problem documentation, understanding and ideation, followed by prototyping and testing in the supermarket, kitchen, commercial building, and residential home.


AS A CO-OP INNOVATION ENGINEERING, YOU WILL: 

  • Assist in research to understand a problem, which might involve internet searches or real-world interviews, focus groups etc.
  • Help with the process of ideation
  • Support prototype development in the module as needed
  • Support testing, whether it is within the Helix module, or outside in the real world

 REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related science field.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Ability to work potentially 40 hours per week (Monday - Friday)

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:  

  • Undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Computer Programming, or a related science field.
  • Experience in Electronics or Computer Programming
  • Strongly prefer a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Sophomore or higher class status.
  • Self-motivated to explore and understand problems and look for solutions.
  • Must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, analytical skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Able to work in a team environment.

The following competencies can vary depending on students education and work background: 

  • Experience drawing 3D using CAD software.
  • Analytical skill and ability to develop math models
  • Experience programming in JavaScript, C#, python, or other language.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office.
  • Familiar with machine learning techniques.
  • Experience writing Apps on Apple platform.

About our Location

The Helix Innovation center is a 40,000-square-foot facility located on the University of Dayton’s campus in Dayton, Ohio. The Helix Center includes five, full-scale, simulated environments including a working commercial kitchen, a two-story residential home, a grocery store, a data center, and a light commercial building. The Helix Innovation Center is advancing research and education for the global HVACR industry by simulating how our products directly impact the industry, and through our innovation and research to continuously improve the food safety and quality for consumers, from farm to fork. With the blend of businesses and functions represented under this one roof, there are many opportunities for advancement within the Helix Innovation Center location.
