Institute Security Officer/Dispatcher

Position summary: Coordinates radio, phone, and computer security system information from communications base station, maintains logs and records, conducts campus patrols, and building/lobby security.

General purpose: To ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors, facilities, and property of the College.

Role qualifications:

  • Excellent customer service with the ability to communicate effectively, in a business like courteous manner.
  • Maintains logs and records, conducts campus patrols, and building/lobby security
  • Coordinates radio, phone, and computer security system information from communications base station.
Position responsibilities:
  • Receive, transmit, coordinate and maintain Base Duty/Communications including Logs and records of various radio, telephone and access control messages.
  • Provide information, and/or referral to the shift supervisor, members of the MICA community and others seeking assistance.
  • Conducts campus patrols and maintains building/lobby security to prevent infraction of rules, direct persons, and answer questions, as necessary.
  • Understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the college and Federal Communications Commission, Federal, Sate and local laws, while performing duties of the position.
  • Position must exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
  • May be subject to on-call work status and may be required to work varied shifts including weekends, nights, and/or holidays.
  • Ability to adjust to fluctuating situations, and act quickly and intelligently in an emergency situation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in law enforcement, security work, or customer service, which includes experience in the operation of radio receiving and transmission equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally via radio, telephone and personal conversations, as well as in writing.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with names, numbers and codes.
  • Experience with emergency situations that require ability to stay calm, exercise sound judgment, and act quickly, when necessary.
  • No criminal record that would restrict access to criminal justice information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word.
  • Familiarization with CCTV and Access Control equipment
Preferred qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in a related police science or customer service discipline.
  • Ability to understand, apply and explain provisions of Federal, State, and City laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, as it relates to departmental activities and services.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid, including Basic Life Support.
  • Graduate of a 4 week or longer Maryland Police Training Commission Police Training program.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Investigation experience

The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up persons and/or equipment in rescue operations. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to work under all weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Campus Safety employee are at time exposed to difficult situations and potentially dangerous situation. Ability to patrol and pursue suspects on foot, respond to fire alarms and medical emergencies. Must be willing to work shift work and/or extended hours, or be called back in an emergency situation.
  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment, Portable Fire Extinguishers, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, Campus Safety Employee Orientation, and SOP Manual review with question and answer discussion.
