SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Special Education Teachers report directly to the building level administration or designee. Qualifications for teaching are set by the NH Department of Education, Bureau of Credentialing. The special education teacher provides a successful learning environment for students with identified disabilities. This is achieved through direct teaching, consultation with other staff, and parental contact.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plans and/or monitors a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, abilities, and goals of students.
  2. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  3. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals. Clear objectives that support State Standards will be established and communicated for all lessons, units, projects, and related activities.
  4. Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting the stated goals and lesson objectives.
  5. Assess the accomplishments of students using a variety of methods on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  6. Consult with district specialists regarding students exhibiting learning difficulties and participate in the referral process for students with suspected learning disabilities.
  7. Communicates with administration, parents and colleagues on a regular basis.
  8. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and procedures, including the development of reasonable rules for behavior.
  9. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  10. Plan and oversee purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals in consultation with appropriate staff (classroom teacher, support personnel, and administration).
  11. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  12. Manage assigned cases to ensure compliance with Federal and State guidelines by providing the following:
    1. Academic assessments.
    2. Specialized instruction, including selection of materials.
    3. Maintain current IEP and related paperwork.
    4. Conduct special education meetings as necessary.
  13. To discharge such other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary, work year, and other conditions are contained in the current bargaining unit agreement. Performance for this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the School Board policy on the evaluation of professional personnel.
