NEN-5 Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) at Los Alamos National Laboratory

NEN-5 Group Leader (R&D Manager 4)

Los Alamos National Laboratory Los Alamos, NM (Onsite) Full-Time
**What You Will Do**

The Systems Design and Analysis Group (NEN-5) within the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division conducts modeling and simulation to evaluate the performance and the potential risks of complex nuclear systems including reactor systems design and analysis, radiation transport modeling, systems modeling for nuclear security, International Safeguards analysis, and applied modeling and simulation for engineered systems.

A primary interest of the group is the design and testing of special purpose reactors for small reactor applications. This includes the development of advanced multi-physics computational methodologies and their application to simulations of nuclear systems and nonproliferation applications. NEN-5 also partners with the Advanced Nuclear Technology Group, NEN-2, in designing and/or predicting behavior of experiments at the NCERC facility in Nevada. Historically, this has included the KRUSTY experiment, a test of a kilowatt prototype fission reactor using Stirling technology, and Hypatia, an yttrium hydride critical experiment; and currently Deimos, a high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) particle experiment in support of advanced reactor development.

Another focus area is weapons stockpile modeling and analysis which includes weapons commodity modeling and supporting strategic decision making for the nuclear weapons stockpile and NNSA Complex. This analysis team works closely with weapons program management at LANL and with stakeholders at NNSA and DoD. The team has active collaborations with other NNSA sites.

In the focus areas of nonproliferation and arms control, the group maintains an ongoing engagement with system modeling and evaluation of treaty monitoring to support the design of future nuclear weapons treaties. The group supports multiple nuclear safeguards and nuclear security programs. NEN-5 is deeply engaged in technical analyses of material attractiveness that inform security policies and practices for nuclear and radiological materials in the U.S and foreign nuclear fuel cycles. The group also provides data analytic modeling for proliferation detection, and modeling and simulation with physics-based hydro-structural codes. Our collaborations cross many organizational boundaries both internal and external to the Laboratory.

The Group Leader (GL) will provide leadership and management of approximately 30 employees and students with an approximate annual budget of $12 M. The GL coordinates the efforts of Team Leaders and Principal Investigators and provides technical direction to maintain and improve capabilities, work quality, and cost and technical effectiveness.
