**The School of Medicine's Division of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immungology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Clinical Science Professional (Serologist- Open Rank: Entry-Senior Level) in the ClinImmune Lab.**

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at all levels are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity. At the intermediate level, duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals. Work at the senior level is performed fully independently.

**Nature of Work**

Clinical Science Professionals perform clinical research related functions which may include patient-oriented research or research conducted with human subjects. Patient-oriented research includes mechanisms of human disease, therapeutic interventions, clinical trials, or development of new technologies. Clinical Science Professionals may also assist with epidemiologic and behavioral studies and/or outcomes research and health services research.

This Clinical Science Professional will be operating as an HLA Serology Technician, performing clinical laboratory testing at the ClinImmune Labs ([ Link removed ] - Click here to apply to HLA Serology Technician (Open Rank: Entry-Senior Level) to determine ABO and MHC compatibility of transplant recipients and donors which includes HLA antibody screening and crossmatching. This position adheres to standards of external regulatory bodies including ABHI, CAP, and CLIA and understands principles of histocompatibility and immunogenetics. The professional will prepare reagents while adhering to strict quality control guidelines; perform and document instrument function checks and preventive maintenance. It is important that the candidate can work independently and with others, readily adapt to changes in the work environment, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously. The professional will need to communicate effectively with others, participate in on-call activities and continuing education, and demonstrate initiative in accomplishing the goals of the laboratory.

**Examples of Duties Performed**

**_All levels, with increasing independence through the Senior level:_**

1. Accessions samples into database, verifies acceptability of specimens for testing, and ensures appropriate requisition accompanies each sample for testing.

Performance Standards

1. Evaluate specimens for proper labeling; verify that label matches the sample ID on requisition.

2. Familiar with database codes and lists for HLA testing, race, billing, transplant type, physicians and donor relationship.

3. Uses database templates as appropriate.

4. Documents unacceptable samples, contacts clinician for redraw as needed.

5. Documents test request changes made by clinician.

2. Understands principles and procedures of clinical histocompatibility testing. Learns test protocols for ABO red cell typing.

Performance Standards

1. Performs forward and reverse red cell ABO blood grouping procedure, including quality control, documentation of results and recognizes atypical results.

2. Maintains sample identity and integrity throughout sample logging, processing, testing and reporting of results.

3. Learns and performs HLA panel reactive antibody (PRA) procedure and protocol for screening of patient sera; demonstrates a working knowledge of different screening methods and understands variations in sensitivity of those techniques.

Performance Standards

1. Handles testing kits according to protocol.

2. Identifies unacceptable samples (e.g. anticoagulated blood)

3. Processes and catalogs patient sera according to protocol; maintains sample identity.

4. Uses appropriate controls and evaluates validity of test results based on expected reactivity of controls.

5. Analyzes reaction patterns to determine PRA and identify antibody specificity; recognizes private and public antibody specificities; familiar with CREGs.

4. Performs class I and II crossmatches on recipient/donor pairs according to written protocol.

Performance Standards

1. Selects appropriate sera and target cells for testing.

2. Uses appropriate method based on patient profile.

3. Includes necessary controls to validate test performance; recognizes limitations of test and consults supervisor with atypical reactions.

4. Interprets test results accurately; reviews patient file for sensitization history, disease, previous crossmatch results and PRA history to aid in interpretation.

5. Completes and reports results within 6 hours of test request.

5. Actively participates in quality assurance program.

Performance Standards

1. Performs and documents necessary instrument and equipment function checks and quality control procedures in accordance with expected ranges.

2. Monitors reagent inventory and notifies supervisor before additional reagents are needed.

3. Participates in reagent preparation; checks pH and documents necessary information in reagent logbook.

4. Reviews procedure manual at least annually and new or revised protocols as they are established.

5. Participates in continuing education activities, including annual re-training in laboratory safety issues in handling bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, hazardous wastes and fire.

6. Performs annual unknown testing of a previously characterized sample for each test that is preformed in lab, including samples from external proficiency testing programs.

7. Work with the quality unit to revise SOP, perform validations, report errors and maintain competency.

6. Records results accurately and concisely communicates them as needed to transplant personnel.

Performance Standards

1. Verifies presence of appropriate paperwork including test requisition, HLA typing sheets and summary report prior to review by supervisor and/or director.

2. Double-checks all paperwork for accuracy and completeness prior to review by supervisor and/or director.

3. Completes reports and relays results in a timely fashion; notifies appropriate personnel when further testing is needed and when results will be ready.

4. Notifies Supervisor of reporting errors found and follows through with necessary documentation.

7. Work ethic: performs assays according to established protocols, follows safety guidelines, uses universal precautions and works well with others and independently.

Performance Standards

1. Follows all established policies and protocols related to testing, reagent preparation and quality control.

2. Participates in the introduction and implementation of new procedures and in the evaluation of new instruments.

3. Willing to take on-call responsibilities and work unscheduled hours; manages daily work schedule and time effectively.

4. Demonstrates effective and pleasant communication skills and human relations; provides quality customer service.

5. Notifies Supervisor and/or Director of assay or equipment malfunctions, which compromise test quality.

6. Performs additional tasks as requested by Supervisor and/or Director.

7. Organizes workload for maximum efficiency; assists co-workers and performs their duties when daily work is completed; contributes to a positive working environment.

8. Maintains a clean and safe working environment.

**_In addition, the Senior level includes:_**

8. Senior Serologist Responsibilities: works closely with the HLA General Supervisor to ensure that daily, weekly and monthly tasks and projects are completed to standard.

Performance Standards

1. Scheduling and ensuring even rotation of proficiency testing, chores, benches and on call schedules for the technologists.

2. Assign and work with technologists and management to ensure projects, validations and verifications are completed to SOP and adhere to the standards of the governing agencies (ACHI/ASHI, CAP, CLIA).

3. Assisting team members Occurrence Reports when errors are made, assisting in the investigation for the root cause and develop the corrective action.

4. Know lab equipment well to identify, guide technologists and troubleshoot technical issues.

5. Oversee training, competency, creating unknown samples for internal proficiency testing and direct observations.

6. Ensures yearly software verification and 6-mo. instrument comparisons are completed.

7. Complete Monthly QC Log Book and inventory reviews for completeness to ensure proper labeling of all reagents, moving approved reagents to designated areas, and ordering inventory as needed.

8. Works with the Quality Unit to develop, test and implement validations of new equipment, methodologies, and/or new reagents.

9. Motivating staff, maintaining an approachable demeanor creating a positive environment where the technologists can ask questions or voice concerns.

**Salary and Benefits**

The salary range ( _or hiring range_ ) for this position has been established at:

**_Entry:_** $44,403 - $56,481

**_Intermediate:_** $48,321 - $61,464

**_Senior:_** $52,239 - $66,448

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range ( _or hiring range_ ) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

+ Bachelor's degree in any field

+ One (1) year of experience as a Serologist

**_Senior Level_**

+ Bachelor's degree in any field

+ A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis

+ Two (2) years' of experience as a Serologist

**Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.**

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ Strong background in immunology and genetics

+ Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists MT(ASCP)

+ American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) certification as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) is preferred.

+ One (1) to three (3) years' of Serology experience
