Job Description
INTRODUCTION:
The Racine Public Library has been a part of the Racine community for 125 years, and counting. Since 1897, we have grown from a single reading room in a downtown building to a two-story community gathering place that services the Racine community east of Interstate 94. In addition to our building, we also have a Bookmobile and a pair of book bikes that stop throughout the community, as well as outreach libraries and a home delivery service.
POSITION PURPOSE:
Racine Public Library is a learning institution. It is expected that all employees be flexible, responsive to change, and take a leadership role when necessary. Employees will contribute to a positive customer experience with the public and co-workers. Essential duties may change in response to evolving community needs. Under the working supervision of the Circulation Lead Worker, and the departmental supervision of the Circulation Supervisor, this position is responsible for giving the public a satisfactory experience at the library while assisting in both the circulation of library materials and in the processes of sorting, shelving and maintaining collection order of library materials.
This position is part-time and scheduled between 20 to 24 hours per week, with the specific schedule being based on departmental needs. Evenings and rotating weekend hours are required.
Essential Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
* Maintain a consistent and reliable attendance record.
* Answers general inquiries of library services and gives directions
* Assist patrons with all aspects checking items out and in, placing holds, advising and collection of monies owed and handling disputes regarding their accounts
* Registers patrons for library cards and maintains their accounts
* Locates materials for patrons and fill holds
* Check in and sort library materials using automated material handler (AMH) RFID sorter for shelving and consortium delivery
* Shelve materials in proper order in areas assigned
* Maintains orderliness of collections
* Assist patrons in the use of printers, microfilm reader, photocopier, scanner and fax machine
* Performs any assigned duties of Circulation
* Performs all Clerk level duties in the library as assigned
* Performs other duties as assigned by Circulation Supervisor, Lead Worker or Assistant
* Participates on various library teams as needed
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
* Normal public library environment, including dealing with the general public, exposure to stress and noise during peak activity periods, and handling a large volume of library materials.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* High school diploma or equivalent required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Library experience preferred
* Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) is desirable
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Ability to sort materials in proper shelf order
* Ability and stamina to physically perform all the necessary tasks assigned to the position
* Ability to work in a stressful environment
* Ability to use personal judgement to effectively problem-solve
* Ability to work with the public and other staff members politely and with respect
* Ability to communicate effectively in a pleasant and professional manner

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION:
Ability to lift 60 pounds from one area to another. Ability to stand for 4 hours with a break. Sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, bending, twisting, reaching, filing, talking, listening, concentrating, handling, grasping, writing, sorting, pushing a loaded book cart.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Normal equipment used in a public library, including but not limited to: automated library computer system, computer workstation / laptop / tablet, AMH RFID sorter, RFID reader, barcode scanner, printer, removable or external storage devices, telephone, copy machine, A/V equipment, fax machine, book trucks, microfilm reader-printers, cash register, and other equipment used in handling library materials.
